Los Angeles average gas price leads the nation at a record-breaking $6.08

Los Angeles Times

On Wednesday the average cost for a gallon of regular gas in Los Angeles reached $6.08, leaping 2.3 cents overnight and breaking a record set earlier this year, according to the latest data from AAA. Los Angeles is not alone in its pain as the cost of gas spikes across the nation. And according to analysts, the switch to a more expensive summer blend for other parts of the country promises the hurt will not stop anytime soon. The average cost for regular gas is more than $4 for nearly every state. According to AAA, the national average is $4.56, but California leads the nation with an average of $6.05.

No gas rebates in sight as average prices in L.A. barrel toward $6 a gallon -- again

Los Angeles Times

Experts say a perfect storm of supply-and-demand issues are sending gas prices in Los Angeles soaring again, with the price-per-gallon increasing more than 14 cents in the last 16 days, according to the latest fuel prices tracked by AAA. L.A. fuel prices are again inching toward a $6-a-gallon record set in March. The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the Los Angeles area is currently $5.91, with plenty of stations charging well over that. A year ago the price was $4.16. Overnight, the price jumped 2.2 cents, the highest level it has risen since February.

Astronaut Mark Vande Hei on his record-breaking spaceflight and adjusting to life on Earth

PBS NewsHour

Geoff Bennett: On March 30, NASA's Mark Vande Hei stepped foot on Earth for the first time in nearly a year. Earlier this week, I talked to the astronaut about his record-setting journey. Geoff Bennett: NASA Astronaut Mark Vande Hei set a new record for the single longest spaceflight by an American, spending 355 days in orbit, and surpassing the record held by retired Astronaut Scott Kelly. When you left for this flight, did you know it would last that long? Mark Vande Hei, Nasa Astronaut: Jeff, I did not know it was ñ it would last that long.

Event Log Sampling for Predictive Monitoring

Predictive process monitoring is an exceedingly active field of research. At its core, the fundamental component of predictive monitoring is the abstraction technique it uses to obtain a fixed-length representation of the process component subject to the prediction (often, but not always, process traces). In the earlier approaches, the need for such abstraction was overcome through model-aware techniques, employing process models and replay techniques on partial traces to abstract a flat representation of event sequences. Such process models are mostly automatically discovered from a set of available complete traces, and require perfect fitness on training instances (and, seldomly, also on unseen test instances).

Panthers beat Sabres to clinch playoff berth

Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Jonathan Huberdeau set Florida's single-season points record, and the Panthers clinched a playoff berth with a 5-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. Huberdeau scored his 24th goal to extend his point streak to eight games and raise his season total to 97, one more than teammate Aleksander Barkov's record set in 2019. "He's a tremendous player, and he deserves it the way he's been playing," said Barkov, who had two assists and is second on the Panthers with 72 points.

NASA Vande Hei, Russian Shkaplerov, Dubrov ready to land on Earth

Al Jazeera

A US astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts are close to returning to Earth together, despite heightened tensions between the United States and Russia over the war in Ukraine. The Russian Soyuz capsule carrying NASA's Mark Vande Hei and his cosmonaut peers Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov undocked from the International Space Station at 2:45am EDT (06:45 GMT) on Wednesday. They are scheduled to make a parachute landing in central Kazakhstan nearly five hours later. The landing zone lies roughly 250 miles (400km) to the northeast of Russia's space launch facility at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 7:28am EDT (11:28 GMT). Vande Hei, 55, completing his second ISS mission, will have logged a US space-endurance record of 355 consecutive days in orbit, surpassing the previous 340-day record set by astronaut Scott Kelly in 2016, according to NASA.

Analysis of Transformer, Attention Mechanism and BERT

Previous dominant sequence transduction models are based on complex recurrent or convolutional neural networks that include an encoder and a decoder. Given an input sequence, models based on RNN will process the sequence word by word, they generate a sequence of hidden states, as a function of the previous hidden state and the input for position t. This inherently sequential nature precludes parallelization within training examples, which becomes critical at longer sequence lengths, as memory constraints limit batching across examples. However, Transformer is based solely on attention mechanisms, dispensing with recurrence and convolutions entirely, to draw global dependencies between input and output, which also allows for more parallelization. Experiments on two machine translation tasks in this paper show these models to be superior in quality while being more parallelizable and requiring significantly less time to train.
