It's alive! How belief in AI sentience is becoming a problem


OAKLAND, Calif., June 30 (Reuters) - AI chatbot company Replika, which offers customers bespoke avatars that talk and listen to them, says it receives a handful of messages almost every day from users who believe their online friend is sentient. "We're not talking about crazy people or people who are hallucinating or having delusions," said Chief Executive Eugenia Kuyda. "They talk to AI and that's the experience they have." The issue of machine sentience - and what it means - hit the headlines this month when Google (GOOGL.O) placed senior software engineer Blake Lemoine on leave after he went public with his belief that the company's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot LaMDA was a self-aware person. Google and many leading scientists were quick to dismiss Lemoine's views as misguided, saying LaMDA is simply a complex algorithm designed to generate convincing human language.

Stop debating whether AI is 'sentient' -- the question is if we can trust it


The past month has seen a frenzy of articles, interviews, and other types of media coverage about Blake Lemoine, a Google engineer who told The Washington Post that LaMDA, a large language model created for conversations with users, is "sentient." After reading a dozen different takes on the topic, I have to say that the media has become (a bit) disillusioned with the hype surrounding current AI technology. A lot of the articles discussed why deep neural networks are not "sentient" or "conscious." This is an improvement in comparison to a few years ago, when news outlets were creating sensational stories about AI systems inventing their own language, taking over every job, and accelerating toward artificial general intelligence. But the fact that we're discussing sentience and consciousness again underlines an important point: We are at a point where our AI systems--namely large language models--are becoming increasingly convincing while still suffering from fundamental flaws that have been pointed out by scientists on different occasions.

Amazon, just say no: The looming horror of AI voice replication


Do we really want to put the power of perfectly simulating a voice in the hands of stalkers and abusers? Last week, we ran a news article entitled, "Amazon's Alexa reads a story in the voice of a child's deceased grandma." In it, ZDNet's Stephanie Condon discussed an Amazon presentation at its re:MARS conference (Amazon's annual confab on topics like machine learning, automation, robotics, and space). In the presentation, Amazon's Alexa AI Senior VP Rohit Prasad showed a clip of a young boy asking an Echo device, "Alexa, can grandma finish reading me'The Wizard of Oz'?" The video then showed the Echo reading the book using what Prasad said was the voice of the child's dead grandmother. The increasing scale of AI is raising the stakes for major ethical questions.

Does this AI know it's alive?


We don't have much reason to think that they have an internal monologue, the kind of sense perception humans have, or an awareness that they're a being in the world. Over the weekend, the Washington Post's Nitasha Tiku published a profile of Blake Lemoine, a software engineer assigned to work on the Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) project at Google. LaMDA is a chatbot AI, and an example of what machine learning researchers call a "large language model," or even a "foundation model." It's similar to OpenAI's famous GPT-3 system, and has been trained on literally trillions of words compiled from online posts to recognize and reproduce patterns in human language. LaMDA is a really good large language model.
