I tried this can-sized TV projector--is it worth it?

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Once upon a time, projectors were big, clunky, and, well, not exactly easy to move around if you want to watch the big game in your backyard or a movie at a friend's house. However, portable projectors have come a long way and Anker's Nebula Capsule II Smart Mini Projector is a solid bet. The Anker projector, which runs Android TV, is lightweight, works with Google Assistant, and has an auto-focus function that automatically adjusts the screen size to your projector screen within a second, not to mention other features that deliver a sharp and clear picture. I've been in the market for a smart projector so I can watch my favorite teams play and watch movies outside. I had high hopes of testing the Nebula Capsule II against a large projection screen in my backyard, but due to the high Florida humidity--and unbearable October heat--I decided to stick to testing the smart projector indoors.

Renesas to Buy Integrated Device Technology for $6.7 Billion

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

Global chip makers have lately been trying to stake out positions in next-generation vehicle technology. Last year, Intel Corp. bought Mobileye, an Israeli company known for chip-based camera systems that power automated driving features, for about $15 billion. Renesas Chief Executive Bunsei Kure said adding IDT would strengthen his company's presence as a supplier of system-on-a-chip products for vehicles equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous driving technology. "Competition in the semiconductor industry has become like mixed martial arts," Mr. Kure said. Renesas was the second-largest semiconductor supplier to the automotive industry by revenue in 2017 with $3.5 billion, following No. 1 NXP Semiconductors NV of the Netherlands at $4.4 billion, according to data from research firm IHS Markit .

Intel's Khosrowshahi: 'We're Leading the Way' in A.I. Processors

#artificialintelligence

Khosrowshahi is a co-founder, along with Naveen Rao, another Intel executive, of a startup called Nervana Systems. I profiled Nervana in October of 2015 for a Barron's cover story about how the rise of cloud computing and artificial intelligence was changing the objectives, and the design, of silicon. After that article, in which it was posited that Intel's microprocessor business might be in trouble, Rao and Khosrowshahi's company was bought by Intel, in August of last year, for terms that were not disclosed, but speculated by the New York Times's Steve Lohr to be north of $400 million. Rao and Khosrowshahi have both been on the road in support of Intel this year. Rao was at Intel's Xeon unveiling in July in New York.

Sony develops remote-driven vehicle that displays ads tailored to passers-by

The Japan Times

Sony Corp. has developed a vehicle that can be driven remotely using advanced sensor technology and artificial intelligence to capture a 360-degree image of its surroundings, the electronics maker said Tuesday. It features five sensors used in high-end digital cameras to relay imagery back to a controller, who can drive the vehicle from afar to transport guests or customers. It can also use artificial intelligence to distinguish the age and gender of people walking nearby, to show demographic-specific advertisements on the 55-inch ultra-high definition 4K displays on each of its four sides -- for example, running an ad for diapers when near young parents with a baby, a company official said. Passengers can also drive the vehicle themselves using an onboard controller and display. The interior display is capable of augmented reality, superimposing computer generated dinosaurs onto the fairway as golfers travel to the next hole, for instance.

Samsung's 'AI-powered' washer is just trying to save you time

Engadget

The event is also a chance for companies to showcase their latest innovations for home appliances. Samsung did its part this year with the WW8800M washer, which sports technology called QuickDrive that promises to complete a full load of laundry in just 39 minutes --typically it's about 70. The company says it's able to do this without compromising washing performance, energy efficiency and fabric care, something that will matter deeply to people who are extra conscious of how they do their laundry. Oh and it says AI is involved. Samsung is betting heavily on the "artificial intelligence" powers of its WW8800M to make laundry day less of a chore.
