New study finds tech elites view the world with more meritocracy

A new study has revealed that while the top 100 richest people in tech share similar views to other wealthy people, they are also more focused on meritocracy. The research, published in PLOS One, used data sets based on tweets by these individuals who were named by Forbes as the top 100 richest people in the tech world, plus their statements on websites about their philanthropic endeavours. As part of the study, the researchers analysed 49,790 tweets from 30 verified Twitter account holders within the tech elite subject group and 60 mission statements from tech elite-run philanthropic websites, plus 17 statements from tech elites and other wealthy individuals not associated with the tech world for comparison purposes. The Twitter text analyses, according to the research, revealed tech elites used Twitter to tweet about subjects that placed emphasis on disruption, positivity, and temporality compared with the average user. Their most frequently used words were'new' and'great', and referred mostly to their peers and other tech firms. At the same time, the authors found that while tweets showed the tech elites did not see a significant difference between power and money or power and democracy, they did note the tech elites denied a connection between democracy and money, a view that was not shared by ordinary Twitter users.


Context-Aware Target Apps Selection and Recommendation for Enhancing Personal Mobile Assistants

Users install many apps on their smartphones, raising issues related to information overload for users and resource management for devices. Moreover, the recent increase in the use of personal assistants has made mobile devices even more pervasive in users' lives. This paper addresses two research problems that are vital for developing effective personal mobile assistants: target apps selection and recommendation. The former is the key component of a unified mobile search system: a system that addresses the users' information needs for all the apps installed on their devices with a unified mode of access. The latter, instead, predicts the next apps that the users would want to launch. Here we focus on context-aware models to leverage the rich contextual information available to mobile devices. We design an in situ study to collect thousands of mobile queries enriched with mobile sensor data (now publicly available for research purposes). With the aid of this dataset, we study the user behavior in the context of these tasks and propose a family of context-aware neural models that take into account the sequential, temporal, and personal behavior of users. We study several state-of-the-art models and show that the proposed models significantly outperform the baselines.


You Are What You Tweet: Profiling Users by Past Tweets to Improve Hate Speech Detection

Hate speech detection research has predominantly focused on purely content-based methods, without exploiting any additional context. We briefly critique pros and cons of this task formulation. We then investigate profiling users by their past utterances as an informative prior to better predict whether new utterances constitute hate speech. To evaluate this, we augment three Twitter hate speech datasets with additional timeline data, then embed this additional context into a strong baseline model. Promising results suggest merit for further investigation, though analysis is complicated by differences in annotation schemes and processes, as well as Twitter API limitations and data sharing policies.


Discriminatory Expressions to Produce Interpretable Models in Microblogging Context

Social Networking Sites (SNS) are one of the most important ways of communication. In particular, microblogging sites are being used as analysis avenues due to their peculiarities (promptness, short texts...). There are countless researches that use SNS in novel manners, but machine learning (ML) has focused mainly in classification performance rather than interpretability and/or other goodness metrics. Thus, state-of-the-art models are black boxes that should not be used to solve problems that may have a social impact. When the problem requires transparency, it is necessary to build interpretable pipelines. Arguably, the most decisive component in the pipeline is the classifier, but it is not the only thing that we need to consider. Despite that the classifier may be interpretable, resulting models are too complex to be considered comprehensible, making it impossible for humans to comprehend the actual decisions. The purpose of this paper is to present a feature selection mechanism (the first step in the pipeline) that is able to improve comprehensibility by using less but more meaningful features while achieving a good performance in microblogging contexts where interpretability is mandatory. Moreover, we present a ranking method to evaluate features in terms of statistical relevance and bias. We conducted exhaustive tests with five different datasets in order to evaluate classification performance, generalisation capacity and actual interpretability of the model. Our results shows that our proposal is better and, by far, the most stable in terms of accuracy, generalisation and comprehensibility.


Emotional Semantics-Preserved and Feature-Aligned CycleGAN for Visual Emotion Adaptation

Thanks to large-scale labeled training data, deep neural networks (DNNs) have obtained remarkable success in many vision and multimedia tasks. However, because of the presence of domain shift, the learned knowledge of the well-trained DNNs cannot be well generalized to new domains or datasets that have few labels. Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) studies the problem of transferring models trained on one labeled source domain to another unlabeled target domain. In this paper, we focus on UDA in visual emotion analysis for both emotion distribution learning and dominant emotion classification. Specifically, we design a novel end-to-end cycle-consistent adversarial model, termed CycleEmotionGAN++. First, we generate an adapted domain to align the source and target domains on the pixel-level by improving CycleGAN with a multi-scale structured cycle-consistency loss. During the image translation, we propose a dynamic emotional semantic consistency loss to preserve the emotion labels of the source images. Second, we train a transferable task classifier on the adapted domain with feature-level alignment between the adapted and target domains. We conduct extensive UDA experiments on the Flickr-LDL & Twitter-LDL datasets for distribution learning and ArtPhoto & FI datasets for emotion classification. The results demonstrate the significant improvements yielded by the proposed CycleEmotionGAN++ as compared to state-of-the-art UDA approaches.


Towards A Sentiment Analyzer for Low-Resource Languages

Twitter is one of the top influenced social media which has a million number of active users. It is commonly used for microblogging that allows users to share messages, ideas, thoughts and many more. Thus, millions interaction such as short messages or tweets are flowing around among the twitter users discussing various topics that has been happening world-wide. This research aims to analyse a sentiment of the users towards a particular trending topic that has been actively and massively discussed at that time. We chose a hashtag \textit{\#kpujangancurang} that was the trending topic during the Indonesia presidential election in 2019. We use the hashtag to obtain a set of data from Twitter to analyse and investigate further the positive or the negative sentiment of the users from their tweets. This research utilizes rapid miner tool to generate the twitter data and comparing Naive Bayes, K-Nearest Neighbor, Decision Tree, and Multi-Layer Perceptron classification methods to classify the sentiment of the twitter data. There are overall 200 labeled data in this experiment. Overall, Naive Bayes and Multi-Layer Perceptron classification outperformed the other two methods on 11 experiments with different size of training-testing data split. The two classifiers are potential to be used in creating sentiment analyzer for low-resource languages with small corpus.


Automatic Detection of Machine Generated Text: A Critical Survey

Text generative models (TGMs) excel in producing text that matches the style of human language reasonably well. Such TGMs can be misused by adversaries, e.g., by automatically generating fake news and fake product reviews that can look authentic and fool humans. Detectors that can distinguish text generated by TGM from human written text play a vital role in mitigating such misuse of TGMs. Recently, there has been a flurry of works from both natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) communities to build accurate detectors for English. Despite the importance of this problem, there is currently no work that surveys this fast-growing literature and introduces newcomers to important research challenges. In this work, we fill this void by providing a critical survey and review of this literature to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of this problem. We conduct an in-depth error analysis of the state-of-the-art detector and discuss research directions to guide future work in this exciting area.


CRAB: Class Representation Attentive BERT for Hate Speech Identification in Social Media

In recent years, social media platforms have hosted an explosion of hate speech and objectionable content. The urgent need for effective automatic hate speech detection models have drawn remarkable investment from companies and researchers. Social media posts are generally short and their semantics could drastically be altered by even a single token. Thus, it is crucial for this task to learn context-aware input representations, and consider relevancy scores between input embeddings and class representations as an additional signal. To accommodate these needs, this paper introduces CRAB (Class Representation Attentive BERT), a neural model for detecting hate speech in social media. The model benefits from two semantic representations: (i) trainable token-wise and sentence-wise class representations, and (ii) contextualized input embeddings from state-of-the-art BERT encoder. To investigate effectiveness of CRAB, we train our model on Twitter data and compare it against strong baselines. Our results show that CRAB achieves 1.89% relative improved Macro-averaged F1 over state-of-the-art baseline. The results of this research open an opportunity for the future research on automated abusive behavior detection in social media


From Twitter to Traffic Predictor: Next-Day Morning Traffic Prediction Using Social Media Data

The effectiveness of traditional traffic prediction methods is often extremely limited when forecasting traffic dynamics in early morning. The reason is that traffic can break down drastically during the early morning commute, and the time and duration of this break-down vary substantially from day to day. Early morning traffic forecast is crucial to inform morning-commute traffic management, but they are generally challenging to predict in advance, particularly by midnight. In this paper, we propose to mine Twitter messages as a probing method to understand the impacts of people's work and rest patterns in the evening/midnight of the previous day to the next-day morning traffic. The model is tested on freeway networks in Pittsburgh as experiments. The resulting relationship is surprisingly simple and powerful. We find that, in general, the earlier people rest as indicated from Tweets, the more congested roads will be in the next morning. The occurrence of big events in the evening before, represented by higher or lower tweet sentiment than normal, often implies lower travel demand in the next morning than normal days. Besides, people's tweeting activities in the night before and early morning are statistically associated with congestion in morning peak hours. We make use of such relationships to build a predictive framework which forecasts morning commute congestion using people's tweeting profiles extracted by 5 am or as late as the midnight prior to the morning. The Pittsburgh study supports that our framework can precisely predict morning congestion, particularly for some road segments upstream of roadway bottlenecks with large day-to-day congestion variation. Our approach considerably outperforms those existing methods without Twitter message features, and it can learn meaningful representation of demand from tweeting profiles that offer managerial insights.


Gender prediction using limited Twitter Data

Transformer models have shown impressive performance on a variety of NLP tasks. Off-the-shelf, pre-trained models can be fine-tuned for specific NLP classification tasks, reducing the need for large amounts of additional training data. However, little research has addressed how much data is required to accurately fine-tune such pre-trained transformer models, and how much data is needed for accurate prediction. This paper explores the usability of BERT (a Transformer model for word embedding) for gender prediction on social media. Forensic applications include detecting gender obfuscation, e.g. males posing as females in chat rooms. A Dutch BERT model is fine-tuned on different samples of a Dutch Twitter dataset labeled for gender, varying in the number of tweets used per person. The results show that finetuning BERT contributes to good gender classification performance (80% F1) when finetuned on only 200 tweets per person. But when using just 20 tweets per person, the performance of our classifier deteriorates non-steeply (to 70% F1). These results show that even with relatively small amounts of data, BERT can be fine-tuned to accurately help predict the gender of Twitter users, and, consequently, that it is possible to determine gender on the basis of just a low volume of tweets. This opens up an operational perspective on the swift detection of gender.
