Quality Data Inputs Essential For Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

Multiple times over the last decade, this column has covered the issue of the importance of data quality in decision making, both by executives as well as machines. Back in 2014, when the "big data" craze was mesmerizing the C-Suite, the warning was issued in Big Data and the Madness of Crowds. More recently in How Bad Data Is Undermining Big Data Analytics from December 2020. Since then, more and more news has emerged regarding the failures of AI and Machine Learning initiatives with the blame given to faulty data as the reason. The recent demise of IBM Watson Health is the latest example.

State of Fashion Technology Report 2022

#artificialintelligence

In 2021, fashion companies invested between 1.6 and 1.8 percent of their revenues in technology. By 2030, that figure is expected to rise to between 3.0 and 3.5 percent. Behind the predicted increase is a conviction among many that technology could create a competitive edge--in customer-facing activities, where companies have mostly focused to date, and, more increasingly, in operations. Technologies such as robotics, advanced analytics, and in-store applications may help streamline processes and support sustainability, as well as create an exceptional customer experience (exhibit). This report is a collaborative effort by Imran Amed, Anita Balchandani, Achim Berg, Holger Harreis, Manuel Hurtado, Saga af Petersens, Roger Roberts, and Carlos Sanchez Altable, representing views from the Apparel, Fashion & Luxury Practice.

Resonance as a Design Strategy for AI and Social Robots

#artificialintelligence

Resonance, a powerful and pervasive phenomenon, appears to play a major role in human interactions. This article investigates the relationship between the physical mechanism of resonance and the human experience of resonance, and considers possibilities for enhancing the experience of resonance within human–robot interactions. We first introduce resonance as a widespread cultural and scientific metaphor. Then, we review the nature of “sympathetic resonance” as a physical mechanism. Following this introduction, the remainder of the article is organized in two parts. In part one, we review the role of resonance (including synchronization and rhythmic entrainment) in human cognition and social interactions. Then, in part two, we review resonance-related phenomena in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). These two reviews serve as ground for the introduction of a design strategy and combinatorial design space for shaping resonant interactions with robots and AI. We conclude by posing hypotheses and research questions for future empirical studies and discuss a range of ethical and aesthetic issues associated with resonance in human–robot interactions.

Gartner: Data Management Disrupted by AI

#artificialintelligence

While strong data management has long been a foundational practice for business intelligence and analytics, enterprise organizations will need to update what they do to meet the needs of growing advanced analytics implementations such as machine learning and other artificial intelligence in the years ahead. That was one of the conclusions of Gartner's recent Data and Analytics Trends report for 2022. "Without the right data, building AI can be risky and even dangerous," says Gartner VP Rita Sallam. "Most organizations, from a data management perspective, address very important AI-specific considerations for data management like data bias, diversity, labeling. They often address those things haphazardly."

Payment Fraud at Record Lows Thanks to Analytics and AI, Visa Says

#artificialintelligence

Despite a massive increase in online activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, fraud on the Visa payment network is at an all time low, the company says. One of the chief reasons for that success is a big investment in advanced analytics and AI. The world changed in March 2020, when many countries went into lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. As retail shops and other physical locations closed, people's attention turned to the Internet for school, work, and play. Since late 2019, the volume of e-commerce traffic has grown by 50%, according to Visa.
