5G & The Future Of Connectivity

As of June 2021, commercial 5G services have already been deployed across more than 1,500 cities in 60 countries worldwide, according to Viavi Solutions. The number of IoT devices -- which will rely on 5G to transmit vast amounts of data in real time -- is projected to grow from 12B in 2020 to 30B in 2025, per IoT Analytics, more than 4 devices for every person on Earth. Executives across industries are already jostling to take advantage of 5G tech -- and avoid being disrupted by it. Earnings call mentions of 5G have soared in recent years. From enabling remote robotic surgery and autonomous cars to improving crop management, 5G is poised to transform many of the world's biggest industries. The impact of 5G on manufacturing could be huge. It's estimated that improved connectivity through 5G will create $13T in global economic value across industries by 2035, according to IHS Markit. A third of that total is projected to come from the manufacturing sector alone. This would enable manufacturers to build "smart factories" that rely on automation, augmented reality, and IoT. And with 5G powering large amounts of IoT devices and sensors around the factory, artificial intelligence can be integrated more deeply with operations. On fast-paced assembly lines, even microseconds of latency can cause costly disruptions for the manufacturer.

This year will be bigger and mightier with TV screens measuring above 75-inch becoming mainstream.


HelpViz: Automatic Generation of Contextual Visual MobileTutorials from Text-Based Instructions

We present HelpViz, a tool for generating contextual visual mobile tutorials from text-based instructions that are abundant on the web. HelpViz transforms text instructions to graphical tutorials in batch, by extracting a sequence of actions from each text instruction through an instruction parsing model, and executing the extracted actions on a simulation infrastructure that manages an array of Android emulators. The automatic execution of each instruction produces a set of graphical and structural assets, including images, videos, and metadata such as clicked elements for each step. HelpViz then synthesizes a tutorial by combining parsed text instructions with the generated assets, and contextualizes the tutorial to user interaction by tracking the user's progress and highlighting the next step. Our experiments with HelpViz indicate that our pipeline improved tutorial execution robustness and that participants preferred tutorials generated by HelpViz over text-based instructions. HelpViz promises a cost-effective approach for generating contextual visual tutorials for mobile interaction at scale.


Screen2Words: Automatic Mobile UI Summarization with Multimodal Learning

Mobile User Interface Summarization generates succinct language descriptions of mobile screens for conveying important contents and functionalities of the screen, which can be useful for many language-based application scenarios. We present Screen2Words, a novel screen summarization approach that automatically encapsulates essential information of a UI screen into a coherent language phrase. Summarizing mobile screens requires a holistic understanding of the multi-modal data of mobile UIs, including text, image, structures as well as UI semantics, motivating our multi-modal learning approach. We collected and analyzed a large-scale screen summarization dataset annotated by human workers. Our dataset contains more than 112k language summarization across $\sim$22k unique UI screens. We then experimented with a set of deep models with different configurations. Our evaluation of these models with both automatic accuracy metrics and human rating shows that our approach can generate high-quality summaries for mobile screens. We demonstrate potential use cases of Screen2Words and open-source our dataset and model to lay the foundations for further bridging language and user interfaces.


AI-fueled app Natural offers new interface for consumer transactions

The Mac's mouse, the iPod's click wheel, the iPhone's multitouch display, and the Apple Watch's digital crown are all part of Apple lore in which a new device class mandated a new user interface. But there's a significant exception to that established pattern: Siri. The voice agent emerged as a way to control some of the iPhone's features but was never a way to completely control it the way Alexa served as the Echo's main user interface. Rather, it could retrieve bits of information and complete simple tasks online. Now, an app called Natural seeks to go beyond what agents such as Siri and Alexa can achieve in terms of transactions while remaining wed to the smartphone's -- or any connected device's -- touchscreen.

There is mounting public concern over the influence that AI based systems has in our society. Coalitions in all sectors are acting worldwide to resist hamful applications of AI. From indigenous people addressing the lack of reliable data, to smart city stakeholders, to students protesting the academic relationships with sex trafficker and MIT donor Jeffery Epstein, the questionable ethics and values of those heavily investing in and profiting from AI are under global scrutiny. There are biased, wrongful, and disturbing assumptions embedded in AI algorithms that could get locked in without intervention. Our best human judgment is needed to contain AI's harmful impact. Perhaps one of the greatest contributions of AI will be to make us ultimately understand how important human wisdom truly is in life on earth.


Mobile Augmented Reality: User Interfaces, Frameworks, and Intelligence

Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) integrates computer-generated virtual objects with physical environments for mobile devices. MAR systems enable users to interact with MAR devices, such as smartphones and head-worn wearables, and performs seamless transitions from the physical world to a mixed world with digital entities. These MAR systems support user experiences by using MAR devices to provide universal accessibility to digital contents. Over the past 20 years, a number of MAR systems have been developed, however, the studies and design of MAR frameworks have not yet been systematically reviewed from the perspective of user-centric design. This article presents the first effort of surveying existing MAR frameworks (count: 37) and further discusses the latest studies on MAR through a top-down approach: 1) MAR applications; 2) MAR visualisation techniques adaptive to user mobility and contexts; 3) systematic evaluation of MAR frameworks including supported platforms and corresponding features such as tracking, feature extraction plus sensing capabilities; and 4) underlying machine learning approaches supporting intelligent operations within MAR systems. Finally, we summarise the development of emerging research fields, current state-of-the-art, and discuss the important open challenges and possible theoretical and technical directions. This survey aims to benefit both researchers and MAR system developers alike.

Hip-hop artist TheHxliday is 19 years old and determined to have true creative control of his visuals as he makes his way up the music business. He's looking to a cell-phone company to achieve that. The Baltimore native, real name Noah Malik Lee, signed a deal with Motown Records last year and released his first major-label EP last week. To commemorate the occasion, he performed in a 20-minute "virtual world" hosted by Verizon on Friday (May 14th), appearing on fans' screens from an unreal landscape. Virtual effects swam around him -- but TheHxliday didn't pop up as an avatar inside a game, the way Travis Scott did with his Astroworld concert inside Fortnite, and the show wasn't meant to reproduce a concert the way Billie Eilish staged her full-length quarantine show.
