The University of Michigan opened the $6.5m, 32 acres Mcity, the world's first controlled environment specifically designed to test the potential of connected and automated vehicle technologies that will lead the way to mass-market driverless cars Ford has become the first major car maker test autonomous vehicles at Mcity – the full-scale simulated real-world urban environment at the University of Michigan. Occupying 32 acres at the University's North Campus Research Complex, M City includes approximately five lane-miles of roads with intersections, traffic signs and signals, sidewalks, benches, simulated buildings, street lights and obstacles Occupying 32 acres at the University's North Campus Research Complex, it includes approximately five lane-miles of roads with intersections, traffic signs and signals, sidewalks, benches, simulated buildings, street lights, and obstacles such as construction barriers. For the most part, self-driving cars will be ready for the open road long before the open road is ready for them. That's true for the private companies designing and building self-driving cars, and for the taxpayer-funded government agencies that design and build the roads on which they'll drive.

'Marjorie Prime' imagines a world where AI keeps us from grieving

Engadget

Despite humanity's astounding technological advances, the one thing that we've never been able to invent our way out of is our own mortality. That's the premise of upcoming sci-fi flick Marjorie Prime, where advances in AI make the human grieving process a thing of the past. Like Spike Jonze's award-winning Her, Marjorie Prime looks to explore what it means to be human and the role that technology could play when it comes to helping us cope with loss. Marjorie Prime will be premiering in New York and L.A on the 18th of August, with a wider US release following shortly afterward.

Robots Could Act as Ethical Mediators Between Patients and Caregivers

IEEE Spectrum Robotics Channel

Whether or not robots can make ethical decisions when presented with novel situations is something that lots and lots of people are still working on, but it's much easier for robots to be ethical in situations where the rules are a little bit clearer, and also when there is very little chance of running over cute animals. At ICRA last month, researchers at Georgia Tech presented a paper on "an intervening ethical governor for a robot mediator in patient-caregiver relationship." To test if a robot mediator could help in such cases, the Georgia Tech researchers--Jaeeun Shim, Ronald Arkin, and Michael Pettinati--developed an intervening ethical governor (IEG). Robots, or AI systems in general, can potentially be effective mediators, making sure that caregivers and patients act ethically and respectfully towards each other, helping to improve relationships rather than replace them.

House Panel Approves Legislation to Speed Deployment of Self-Driving Cars

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An influential U.S. House Committee on Thursday approved a revised bipartisan bill on a 54-0 vote that would speed the deployment of self-driving cars without human controls and bar states from blocking autonomous vehicles.

China's Artificial Intelligence Revolution

#artificialintelligence

By this time, China hopes to have achieved important progress in next generation AI technologies, including big data, swarm intelligence, hybrid enhanced intelligence, and autonomous intelligent systems. China's core AI industry should have surpassed 400 billion RMB (about $59 billion), with AI-related fields exceeding 5 trillion RMB (about $740 billion). To support its continued primacy in AI, China plans to create leading AI innovation and personnel training bases, while constructing more comprehensive for legal, regulatory, ethical, and policy frameworks. While formulating legal, regulatory, and ethical frameworks on AI, China will create mechanisms to ensure appropriate safety and security in AI systems.

What sort of silicon brain do you need for artificial intelligence?

#artificialintelligence

As AI continues to make the headlines, researchers are pushing its capabilities to make it increasingly competent at basic tasks such as recognizing vision and speech. Originally, neural network training all happened in 32‑bit floating point, but it has optimized its newer Volta architecture, announced in May, for 16‑bit inputs with 32‑bit internal mathematics. The newer generation, announced in May, offers floating point precision and can be used for training, too. "It's going to save them a lot of money," said Karl Freund, senior analyst for high performance computing and deep learning at Moor Insights and Strategy.

Artificial intelligence to play a huge part in learning after US$100m raised

SHANGHAI-BASED online English learning platform Liulishuo said yesterday it has raised US$100 million from institutional investors and previous investors to fuel its future growth into artificial intelligence and tailor-made programs for English learners. China Media Capital and Wu Capital, as well as previous investors including TrustBridge, IDG Capital, GGV Capital, Cherubic Ventures and Hearst Ventures, have been announced as investors in the platform. Wang Yi, co-founder and chief executive officer of Liulishuo, said the company plans to hire more talent in the artificial intelligence field and to offer more AI-driven educational services besides its current AI-powered personalized interactive courses. "We hope to maintain our leading position in the artificial intelligence-backed online education field and to further enhance efficiency in English learning," he said, adding that they also hope to build an artificial intelligence learning research institution within two or three years.

So you program it with a set of rules which should operate like boundaries, they give the computer a sphere within which to operate. It's far more likely that self-navigating shipping tankers or advanced factory machinery are introduced by 2020 or 2025 than advanced consumer products. When the AI sector creates products for the consumer market, it will have to take into account the whims and lunacy of people like you and I. Musk pointed out that free market competition is driving AI development at an unhealthy rate, lawmakers need a chance to catch up.
