Welcome to the age of the 'ultra-realistic' art robot

#artificialintelligence

For Meller, these questions are the whole point. Last month, Ai-Da launched her first exhibition in Venice, to coincide with the 2022 Venice Biennale. Over five connected spaces at InParadiso gallery, she presents holographic video art, sculptures, poetry, and paintings created on-site. The reaction so far has been overwhelmingly positive. "People love the spectacle," Meller tells Dazed.

Record-breaking camera keeps everything between 3 cm and 1.7 km in focus

#artificialintelligence

In photography, depth of field refers to how much of a three-dimensional space the camera can focus on at once. A shallow depth of field, for example, would keep the subject sharp but blur out much of the foreground and background. Now, researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology have taken inspiration from ancient trilobytes to demonstrate a new light field camera with the deepest depth of field ever recorded. Their visual systems were quite complex, including compound eyes, featuring anywhere between tens and thousands of tiny independent units, each with its own cornea, lens and photoreceptor cells. One trilobyte in particular, Dalmanitina socialis, captured the attention of NIST researchers due to its unique compound eye structure.

Snap Is Fueling Our Selfie Obsessions With a Flying Camera

WIRED

Snap is mostly known for its sticky social network consisting of fleeting messages and legitimately impressive augmented reality filters. But every so often Snap, which calls itself a "camera company," produces new hardware. Things get a little weird. This is one of those times. During its annual Snap Partner Summit today, the company showed off a flying camera, the type of device otherwise known as a drone.

Called the HERO10 Black Bones, this is a cut-down, ventilated version of the Hero10 specifically designed to fit onto a drone. Weighing in at an incredible 54g, the HERO10 Black Bones brings with it all the benefits of the full-sized GoPro -- 5.3K 60FPS video, HyperSmooth stabilization, 1/2.3-inch Apart from the smaller size and weight, the biggest change with the HERO10 Black Bones is that it doesn't contain a battery.

How Samsung is using AI software to up the camera game on its smartphones

ZDNet

Samsung has applied approximately 60 new AI models run by the neural processing unit (NPU) to optimise the functions of the Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphone camera, a company executive said. This has allowed the South Korean tech giant to offer camera experiences that can satisfy casual users with the best photographs possible and professional users with RAW files equivalent to those taken on DSLR cameras, said Joshua Sungdae Cho, vice president and head of visual software R&D at Samsung's MX Business, in an interview with ZDNet. "We've applied NPUs to our smartphones for the first time three years ago," said Cho. "At the time, these NPU ran approximately 10 AI models. On the Galaxy S22 Ultra, there are now 60 AI models. Basically, the NPU is involved in nearly all functions of the cameras."

More flagship phones on the horizon: Xiaomi's 12 Series gets a global launch

ZDNet

Xiaomi announced its flagship 12-series smartphones in China towards the end of December 2021, and has now given the three new handsets – Xiaomi 12 Pro, Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12X – a global launch. The 12 Pro and 12 phones are based on Qualcomm's top-end 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, while the 12X is powered by the less powerful but more power-efficient 7nm Snapdragon 870 5G mobile platform. The 12-series phones employ what Xiaomi calls a'high-performing cooling system' including a'super large' vapour chamber and multiple layers of graphite. All three devices have 120Hz AMOLED displays (6.73 inches on the 12 Pro and 6.28 inches on the 12 and 12X), with 12-bit colour support – that's 68.7 billion colours – available on the two 6.28-inch devices. There are triple rear camera arrays across the board, and Xiaomi is highlighting advances in AI-assisted photography and videography with the 12-series phones.

Deepfakes Can Help Families Mourn--or Exploit Their Grief

WIRED

We now have the ability to reanimate the dead. Improvements in machine learning over the past decade have given us the ability to break through the fossilized past and see our dearly departed as they once were: talking, moving, smiling, laughing. Though deepfake tools have been around for some time, they've become increasingly available to the general public in recent years, thanks to products like Deep Nostalgia--developed by ancestry site My Heritage--that allow the average person to breathe life back into those they've lost. Despite their increased accessibility, these technologies generate controversy whenever they're used, with critics deeming the moving images--so lifelike yet void of life--"disturbing," "creepy," and "admittedly queasy." In 2020, when Kanye got Kim a hologram of her late father for her birthday, writers quickly decried the gift as a move out of Black Mirror.

Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen)

#artificialintelligence

The new $130 Echo Show 8 takes the top rank as the greatest Alexa smart display, with the Echo Show 10 being more novelty than necessity (that revolving screen doesn't support the $250 price tag). The second iteration of Amazon's mid-sized smart speaker with a display, which was released this month, combines some of the greatest features from the Show 10 (13-megapixel camera, digital zoom, and security camera functions) and compresses them into a more manageable size. The Echo Show 8 has a small enough footprint to sit on a bedside table or a kitchen counter. The Show 8 (available in Charcoal and Glacier White) offers the most bang (and screen size) for your buck, with a virtually identical design to its predecessor (same display, same speakers), but with a bit more behind the hood, including a new octo-core processing and a beefed-up camera. You can still watch shows, listen to music, control your smart home, send out announcements to your family, and check in on friends and family, but you can now zoom with a 13-megapixel camera.
