Tesla is shutting down its facility in San Mateo, California, and has cut an estimated 200 jobs as the electric vehicle giant works to reduce costs and get its employees back to physical work settings. The news came as workers at Tesla's Fremont facility were reported to have struggled with CEO Elon Musk's back-to-office mandate. People with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to Bloomberg revealed that an estimated 200 workers under the Autopilot team of the San Mateo facility have been laid off. The layoffs are believed to have been part of the electric vehicle giant's efforts at cost-cutting. Tesla's autopilot unit involves hundreds of data annotation employees responsible for labeling videos from the company's cars.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is often presented in binary terms in both popular culture and political analysis. Either it represents the key to a futuristic utopia defined by the integration of human intelligence and technological prowess, or it is the first step toward a dystopian rise of machines. This same binary thinking is practiced by academics, entrepreneurs, and even activists in relation to the application of AI in combating climate change. The technology industry's singular focus on AI's role in creating a new technological utopia obscures the ways that AI can exacerbate environmental degradation, often in ways that directly harm marginalized populations. In order to utilize AI in fighting climate change in a way that both embraces its technological promise and acknowledges its heavy energy use, the technology companies leading the AI charge need to explore solutions to the environmental impacts of AI.

SEOUL, May 23, 2022 – Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) announced on April 29 that it recently carried out a project with Microsoft Korea to prove digital twin technology is effective at predicting an electric vehicle's battery lifespan and optimizing its battery management and performance. Using Microsoft's cloud service Azure, the Group created digital twins of actual electric vehicles (EVs) with the aim to improve the accuracy of battery lifespan prediction and customize battery management systems for each EV model. Based on the project's success, the Group will implement digital twin technology as a way to improve battery performance going forward. Through this collaboration, the Group created digital twins of EVs in a virtual space based on various driving data collected from actual EVs in the real world, and used the virtual EVs to predict the battery lifespan of each vehicle. This high-level, data-integrated analysis model uses artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and physical models to comprehensively analyze information, such as charging and discharging cycles as well as parking and driving environments.
Uber announced a few big plans at its product event on Monday, including autonomous deliveries and the ability to specify if you want your ride to be an electric vehicle. Now, to be clear, these new features will not be rolling out to everyone right away. Uber rolled out its Comfort Electric program in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Dubai, while promising it would add more cities soon. The feature lets riders choose an electric ride, similar to how you can order a larger vehicle (Uber XL) or a ride with your pet (Uber Pet). "It's as simple as tap a button and request a ride in a premium EV like a Tesla or Polestar," the company wrote in a press release.
