CES 2018: Seagate announces 1PB high-density enclosure

CES showcases the tech trends that will shape the year ahead. See the most important products that will impact businesses and professionals. Seagate has announced a new high-density enclosure that it said will be powered by its latest operating system to improve performance, reliability, and security. The 5U84, announced at CES 2018, provides 1PB of storage capacity per unit and occupies just five datacentre rack units. It can stack up to between 8PB and 10PB per rack, with up to 84 3.5-inch SAS hard disk drives or solid state drives per enclosure.

You'd think computers spend most of their time and energy doing, well, computation. But that's not the case: about 90 percent of a computer's execution time and electrical energy is spent transferring data between the processor and the memory banks, says Subhasish Mitra, a computer scientist at Stanford University. Even if Moore's law continued on indefinitely, computers would still be limited by this memory bottleneck. This week in the journal Nature, Mitra and collaborators describe a new computer architecture they say addresses this problem--and that Mitra believes will improve both the energy efficiency and speed of computers by a factor of 1000. The new 3D architecture is based on novel devices including 2 million carbon nanotube transistors and over 1 million resistive RAM cells, all built on top of a layer of silicon using existing fabrication methods and connected by densely packed metal wiring between the layers.


New Qualcomm auto chipset advances vehicle-to-everything communications

Qualcomm on Friday is introducing a new Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) chipset and reference design that should bring automakers one step closer to deploying the communications systems needed for fully autonomous vehicles. The Qualcomm 9150 C-V2X chipset, expected to be available for commercial sampling in the second half of 2018, is based on specs from the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations. Meanwhile, Qualcomm's C-V2X reference design will feature the 9150 C-V2X chipset, an application processor running the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) V2X stack, as well as a Hardware Security Module (HSM). Qualcomm already has mulitple automotive partners endorsing the new chipset, including Ford, Audi, the PSA Group and SAIC. "We welcome Qualcomm Technologies' cellular-V2X product announcement, as the automotive industry and ecosystem work towards C-V2X implementation, and pave the path to 5G broadband and future operating services," Don Butler, executive director of Connected Vehicle and Services at Ford, said in a statement.

The LM35 device has an advantage over linear temperature sensors calibrated in Kelvin, as the user is not required to subtract a large constant voltage from the output to obtain convenient Centigrade scaling.

Janac: If you are using layers and stacks, you can go all the way from layout into architecture for a particular piece of a chip. It gets used by the architect, by the RTL developer, by the layout person, by the verification engineer, for what is essentially a vertical slice of the chip.

Artificial intelligence, machine and deep learning are some of the hottest areas in all of high-tech today. We've had a few generations of AI over the last 50 years, but in 2010, IBM kicked off the latest cycle with Watson, using brute-force, Big Data techniques to win jeopardy. The University of Toronto in 2012 pioneered Imagenet using deep learning to identify pictures. NVIDIA then began to drive the GPU-accelerated training technology of deep neural nets, and in the course of that, huge service providers opened up and announced initiatives beginning with Microsoft, Google, Apple, Samsung, and then Amazon. Chinese giants Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent are of course, involved.


Samsung expands ARTIK IoT module line-up, upgrades cloud

Samsung Electronics has introduced two new modules in its ARTIK IoT platform and updated cloud capabilities. The new ARTIK 0 family is low-power, lightweight and cost-optimized, while the higher-spec ARTIK 7 is intended for high-end gateways and multimedia applications. ARTIK 0 is for end-devices such as HVAC, lighting, industrial sensors, and personal health monitoring. It has a power-efficient ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers and supports lower power wireless standards: ZigBee, Thread, or Bluetooth Smart. It comes with networking stacks, RF, and precertification for regulatory approval.


Intel to Acquire AI Startup Nervana Systems

San Diego, California-based Nervana will help develop Intel's artificial intelligence portfolio and enhance the deep learning performance of Intel Xeon and Intel Xeon Phi processors, the company said in a blog post. Investors in Nervana include Global Playground, CME Ventures, Lux Capital, Allen & Co and AME Cloud Ventures. Allen & Co LLC is the exclusive financial adviser to Nervana in the deal. "Success in this space requires continued innovation to deliver an optimized, scalable platform providing the highest performance at lowest total cost of ownership… I'm excited to announce that Intel signed a definitive agreement to acquire Nervana Systems, a recognized leader in deep learning. Founded in 2014, Nervana has a fully-optimized software and hardware stack for deep learning.


Nervana Systems Named A 'Cool Vendor' By Gartner
