It may sound like something straight out of Star Wars, but Hyundai's planned'walking car' is a step closer to reality after the vehicle manufacturer unveiled a new $20 million (£16 million) development centre to expedite its arrival. The aim of the New Horizon Studio, which has opened in Montana in the US, is to build vehicles for future customers who want or need to travel over terrains which are challenging for conventional ground vehicles. It will focus on the development of Ultimate Mobility Vehicles (UMVs), including a car with legs that can simply walk over anything it struggles to drive over. The Elevate concept, which resembles the All Terrain Armoured Transport (AT-AT) walkers found in the Star Wars universe, combines a traditional wheel with a leg that unfolds for dangerous terrain. From March 14 to 20, "Brain Week" took place, an event coordinated by the Society for Neuroscience under the patronage of Mrs. Frédérique Vidal, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. Itis in this context that Jean-Stéphane Bron's documentary film "Five News from the Brain" was presented on March 14 in Montpellier. Born in Lausanne in 1969, Jean-Stéphane Bron is a graduate of the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL). In 1997, he directed Connu de nos services, then in 1999 La bonne conduite, nominated for the Prix Europa for best TV documentary, and Mais im Bundeshuus / Le génie helvétique, which won the Swiss Film Prize in 2004. His documentary films have been distinguished in Europe and the United States, including the Original Vision Award from New York Time.

State of AI Ethics Report (Volume 6, February 2022) Artificial Intelligence

As we are in the third millennium, much attention is focusing on the tremendous advances in genetics, mainly cybernetic technologies that facilitate a "blending" of human beings with machines. Such a blending occurs not only when parts of the body are replaced by mechanical devices but also via direct connections between the human brain and silicon-based devices, such as computers. To the extent that we depend on some mechanical or artificial devices (filled teeth, glasses or contact lenses, hearing aids, pacemakers, etc.) for our bodies to properly function, we are "cyborgs" or "cybernetic organisms" – combinations of humanity and technology. The new developments in cybernetic technology, however, could usher in vastly expanded potentials for accessing information, for connecting and participating in virtual worlds of our own design, for redefining how we experience our world, and perhaps even for thinking itself. Challenges of Artificial Intelligence -- From Machine Learning and Computer Vision to Emotional Intelligence Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a part of everyday conversation and our lives. It is considered as the new electricity that is revolutionizing the world. AI is heavily invested in both industry and academy. However, there is also a lot of hype in the current AI debate. AI based on so-called deep learning has achieved impressive results in many problems, but its limits are already visible. AI has been under research since the 1940s, and the industry has seen many ups and downs due to over-expectations and related disappointments that have followed. The purpose of this book is to give a realistic picture of AI, its history, its potential and limitations. We believe that AI is a helper, not a ruler of humans. We begin by describing what AI is and how it has evolved over the decades. After fundamentals, we explain the importance of massive data for the current mainstream of artificial intelligence. The most common representations for AI, methods, and machine learning are covered. In addition, the main application areas are introduced. Computer vision has been central to the development of AI. The book provides a general introduction to computer vision, and includes an exposure to the results and applications of our own research. Emotions are central to human intelligence, but little use has been made in AI. We present the basics of emotional intelligence and our own research on the topic. We discuss super-intelligence that transcends human understanding, explaining why such achievement seems impossible on the basis of present knowledge,and how AI could be improved. Finally, a summary is made of the current state of AI and what to do in the future. In the appendix, we look at the development of AI education, especially from the perspective of contents at our own university.

The Web Is Your Oyster -- Knowledge-Intensive NLP against a Very Large Web Corpus Artificial Intelligence

In order to address the increasing demands of real-world applications, the research for knowledge-intensive NLP (KI-NLP) should advance by capturing the challenges of a truly open-domain environment: web scale knowledge, lack of structure, inconsistent quality, and noise. To this end, we propose a new setup for evaluating existing KI-NLP tasks in which we generalize the background corpus to a universal web snapshot. We repurpose KILT, a standard KI-NLP benchmark initially developed for Wikipedia, and ask systems to use a subset of CCNet - the Sphere corpus - as a knowledge source. In contrast to Wikipedia, Sphere is orders of magnitude larger and better reflects the full diversity of knowledge on the Internet. We find that despite potential gaps of coverage, challenges of scale, lack of structure and lower quality, retrieval from Sphere enables a state-of-the-art retrieve-and-read system to match and even outperform Wikipedia-based models on several KILT tasks - even if we aggressively filter content that looks like Wikipedia. We also observe that while a single dense passage index over Wikipedia can outperform a sparse BM25 version, on Sphere this is not yet possible. To facilitate further research into this area, and minimise the community's reliance on proprietary black box search engines, we will share our indices, evaluation metrics and infrastructure.

CASPR: A Commonsense Reasoning-based Conversational Socialbot Artificial Intelligence

We report on the design and development of the CASPR system, a socialbot designed to compete in the Amazon Alexa Socialbot Challenge 4. CASPR's distinguishing characteristic is that it will use automated commonsense reasoning to truly "understand" dialogs, allowing it to converse like a human. Three main requirements of a socialbot are that it should be able to "understand" users' utterances, possess a strategy for holding a conversation, and be able to learn new knowledge. We developed techniques such as conversational knowledge template (CKT) to approximate commonsense reasoning needed to hold a conversation on specific topics. We present the philosophy behind CASPR's design as well as details of its implementation. We also report on CASPR's performance as well as discuss lessons learned.

Relation Prediction as an Auxiliary Training Objective for Improving Multi-Relational Graph Representations Artificial Intelligence

Learning good representations on multi-relational graphs is essential to knowledge base completion (KBC). In this paper, we propose a new self-supervised training objective for multi-relational graph representation learning, via simply incorporating relation prediction into the commonly used 1vsAll objective. The new training objective contains not only terms for predicting the subject and object of a given triple, but also a term for predicting the relation type. We analyse how this new objective impacts multi-relational learning in KBC: experiments on a variety of datasets and models show that relation prediction can significantly improve entity ranking, the most widely used evaluation task for KBC, yielding a 6.1% increase in MRR and 9.9% increase in Hits@1 on FB15k-237 as well as a 3.1% increase in MRR and 3.4% in Hits@1 on Aristo-v4. Moreover, we observe that the proposed objective is especially effective on highly multi-relational datasets, i.e. datasets with a large number of predicates, and generates better representations when larger embedding sizes are used.
