iPhone turns 10: Apple CEO Tim Cook promises 'best is yet to come' for revolutionary smartphone

The Independent

Tim Cook has said that the "best" of the iPhone is still yet to come, as Apple celebrates its 10th birthday. The first phone was introduced on 9 January 2007 at a Macworld event in San Francisco, by Steve Jobs. The late Apple co-founder described the pocket computer as three products in one – "a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough internet communications device". Now, 10 years later, the company is celebrating the anniversary by promising that the upcoming phones – presumably including the much-rumoured iPhone 8 – will bring updates better than those seen in the phones since 2007. iPhone update could include 'Theatre Mode' for checking phones in the cinema, leaks suggest

The Independent

Apple could soon update the iPhone with a special mode meant for the cinema. Tweets sent by regular Apple leaker Sonny Dickson claim that the first beta of iOS 10.3, the latest update to iPhones, will be sent out on 10 January. It will include a special theatre mode that will be triggered by clicking a popcorn-shaped icon in the phone's control centre. Mr Dickson didn't indicate what that icon would actually do. But several outlets have speculated that it could be linked to a patent that Apple already owns, intended for making the phone easier to check in the cinema.

iPhone 8 might be red and otherwise look the same as the iPhone 7, report claims

The Independent

The next iPhone is going to be red, according to at least one rumour. Apple will release an iPhone 7s and 7s Plus towards the end of next year, sporting the new colour, according to a report from MacOtakara. Other than the big change to the colour, the phone will keep the same aluminium design and look almost the same as the iPhone 7, the blog reported citing a Taiwanese supplier. That means that it will look almost identical with the iPhone 6 and 6s, too – with the exception of the headphone jack – meaning that Apple would have been using the same basic design for four generations of iPhone. Apple offers views on automated car policy, but cagey about its plans

Apple has said in comments to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is "excited" about the potential use of automated systems in many areas, including transportation. The company's director of product integrity Steve Kenner wrote that Apple is "investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation." Kenner did not say if the company would design or make self-driving vehicles or perhaps only license some of its machine learning software to car makers, reflecting Apple's continued reticence on its plans for the automated vehicles market. The company could not be immediately reached for more information on its plans. Apple is already doing deals with car makers in the area of iPhone integration.

How to get more phone storage space: Fill up your iPhone with huge apps

The Independent

It seems like strange advice: if your phone is full up with rubbish and you want to free some of the storage up, then download even more rubbish. A new trick lets people get extra space on their iPhone just by downloading some new apps, and by tricking the phone into believing that it needs to clear up some space. To do it, all you need to do is to download a big app that takes up more space on your phone than you have left. As soon as you do so, your iPhone will automatically start clearing up much-needed storage space. Elon Musk: Apple Inc Would Be 'More Direct' Self-Driving Car Competitor To Tesla Motors Than Google

International Business Times

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has brushed aside concern that Google could become a rival in self-driving cars. Instead, he practically confirmed that Apple will be Tesla's self-driving car rival. Google and major automakers like Ford, Audi and General Motors have been testing self-driving cars in the wild while Apple's electric car project is still an unconfirmed but widely accepted open secret that has Apple fanatics salivating. Speaking Wednesday night at an annual gathering of Silicon Valley royalty known as the Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Tesla's futurist co-founder was asked if Google is considered Tesla's crosstown tech industry rival. Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday that Apple, not Google, is a potential competitor to his electric car company's efforts to be a leader in autonomous driving.

Riding shotgun in a DIY self-driving car

On the morning of our meeting he had to take the car out to "teach" it to drive using botts dots as lane markers. That's the main conceit of Comma's semiautonomous driving system: teaching the car to drive by actually driving it. "It's a great way of being part of self-driving cars," Hotz told Engadget. Without thinking about the amount of technology or research that's been put into the car, Comma's system is almost as good as Tesla's Autopilot but without the lane-changing capability or the road-sign reading found on other systems (features Hotz calls gimmicky).

He drives through San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood and then onto Interstate 280. The technology he's building represents an end run on much more expensive systems being designed by Google, Uber, the major automakers, and, if persistent rumors and numerous news reports are true, Apple. More short term, he thinks he can challenge Mobileye, the Israeli company that supplies Tesla Motors, BMW, Ford Motor, General Motors, and others with their current driver-assist technology. At 14, he was a finalist in the prestigious Intel International Science & Engineering Fair for building a robot that could scan a room and figure out its dimensions.

Hands-on with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in a 2016 Chevy Tahoe

The touchscreen icons are labeled phone, music, maps, messages, now playing, podcasts, audiobooks, and At Bat and appear as two rows of four. Pressing and holding the steering wheel mounted voice control button now launches Siri so you can perform Siri actions without ever taking your hands off the steering wheel. The Google Now cards interface is what appears when you first launch Android Auto, but you can access other functions from the bottom row of options so that maps, messages, media, and phone functionality is similar to Apple CarPlay. Messaging works similar to Apple CarPlay, but Android Auto also supports third party messaging services so you can use apps such as Hangouts, Skype, WhatsApp, and more.
