Cyber Monday gaming deals for 2024: The best sales for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PC

Engadget

Another Black Friday has come and gone, but many of the better gaming deals we saw last week are still kicking. If you're looking to pad out your backlog, pick up a new console or refresh your desktop with new peripherals, we've rounded up a few Cyber Monday gaming deals that are genuinely decent. The selection includes a ton of popular Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC games at their lowest prices to date, 75 off PS5 consoles and several discounts on accessories we've tested and recommended. We've dug through reviews and used price history trackers to ensure each offer below is a genuine deal, and we'll update this post if prices change as the day rolls along. PlayStation 5 (slim) for 424 at Amazon ( 76 off MSRP): This isn't the absolute biggest price drop to date for Sony's console, but larger discounts have been extremely uncommon over the past year. This bundle throws in a few Fortnite skins and V-Bucks; if it runs out of stock, the standalone console is available for the same price. Walmart and Best Buy, meanwhile, have separate bundles that pair the machine with the recent RPG Dragon Age: The Veilguard or one of EA's sports games for 450. Also available at Best Buy, Target, GameStop and PlayStation Direct, among others. PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (slim) NBA 2K25 bundle for 374 at GameStop ( 76 off): If you have no interest in buying physical media, you can save an extra 50 upfront by going with the PS5's disc-less model. This bundle comes with the latest NBA 2K game as a freebie.

How Sony could reclaim handheld gaming from Nintendo and the smartphone

The Guardian

A report from Bloomberg this week suggests that Sony is working on a new portable PlayStation device. As someone who still has a PlayStation Vita languishing in my desk drawer because I can't quite bear to put it in the attic, this is an exciting prospect. It has been almost 13 years since Sony released the Vita, its last portable console, and it's such a wonder of a thing, with its big crisp screen and dinky little sticks. I wish more people had made games for it – paper-craft adventure Tearaway and topsy-turvy platform-puzzler Gravity Rush remain underrated. Actually, apart from the lovely and extremely niche Playdate, nobody has bothered to release a dedicated handheld games console in over a decade.

Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Review: More Power, More Immersion, More Money

WIRED

I remember the first time I watched a tutorial on Blender, a 3D computer graphics software, explaining how metal surfaces have colored reflections, while nonmetal surfaces don't. It was a fascinating art lesson and something I don't think I ever would've noticed if no one had pointed it out. I felt excited to learn about such a cool, if inconsequential detail about how our world looks. While testing out Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro, I experienced that same feeling over and over again. Generally, video game graphics have reached the coveted point of "good enough."

PS5 Pro reviews: Top 3 complaints about the new console

Mashable

Sony's PlayStation 5 is finally here and the reviews are in. Sony's refresh of the PlayStation 5 is garnering moderate applause across the tech world as reviewers dive into its features. Early impressions from The Verge, IGN, Tom's Hardware, and others suggest the PS5 Pro has leveled up and is now the ultimate way to experience gaming on the console. All that said, the biggest standout so far has been PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) -- Sony's new AI-powered upscaling tool. Not only is the PS5 Pro a performance beast, but it's also a feat of thoughtful redesign.

Pushing Buttons: Is there even any point in making more powerful games consoles?

The Guardian

Last week, my favoured gaming news site, VGC, asked former US PlayStation boss Shawn Layden whether he thought the pursuit of more powerful consoles was still the way to go for the video games industry. His answer was not what I expected. "We've done these things this way for 30 years, every generation those costs went up and we realigned with it. We've reached the precipice now, where the centre can't hold, we cannot continue to do things that we have done before … It's time for a real hard reset on the business model, on what it is to be a video game," he said. "We're at the stage of hardware development that I call'only dogs can hear the difference'. We're fighting over teraflops and that's no place to be. We need to compete on content. Jacking up the specs of the box, I think we've reached the ceiling."

Astro Bot review – glittering ideas make Team Asobi's 3D platformer a gem

The Guardian

When I say that Astro Bot reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy, I could pay it no higher compliment. It has taken me around its own small galaxy of planetoid-style levels, from bathhouses to diorama-sized jungle temples to rainy islands, each host to a brilliant one-shot idea, such as a pair of frog boxing gloves or a backpack monkey or a time-stopping watch that lets you freeze giant zooming darts in place so you can jump on them. It is splendid to witness this development team's creativity let loose. Team Asobi has previously made a couple of short-form Astro Bot games – one for the PSVR, Rescue Mission, and another that came packaged with the PS5 at launch, Astro's Playroom – but this one is full-length, complete with challenging bonus levels that play out like electrified skill-check gauntlets for the generation raised on 3D platformers. It is supremely funny and characterful, thanks to the titular chibi blue-and-white robot and his crowd of friends, many of whom are dressed up as characters from the most obscure crevices of PlayStation history.
