Self-driving robots hitting London streets for new trial

The Independent

Hermes has announced a new trial for self-driving delivery robots in the UK. The autonomous machines, which have a top speed of 4mph, are 55cm tall and 70cm long, and weigh 18kg. They can carry up to 10kg at a time, with packages stored inside a secure compartment that can be unlocked with a code sent to the customer's phone. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. US Army 'hoverbike' drone will carry guns and armour into battle

The Independent

The'hoverbike' quadcopter being developed by the US Army looks set to be used for the delivery of supplies, rather than soldiers. The Joint Tactical Aerial Resupply Vehicle (JTARV), as it's formally known, was previously believed to have been designed to carry soldiers into battle wherever and whenever reinforcements were required, but a new release from the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) makes no reference to that particular use-case. It instead likens the contraption, which resembles a pair of drones attached to a table-top, to Amazon's delivery service. UK's 4G mobile coverage 'worse than Albania, Panama and Peru'

The Independent

Britain is "languishing in the digital slow lane" with 4G connectivity lagging behind the networks of countries like Romania, Albania, Panama and Peru, according to the Government's official infrastructure advisers. Market provision of mobile services has left too many "digital deserts" and "not spots" where users cannot get 4G signals, even within major city centres, the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) found. It called on the Government to step in to ensure that basic talk, text and data services are available to all Britons, wherever they live, work and travel, and to make the country ready for next-generation 5G communications. The NIC was asked in March to advise ministers on how the UK can become a "world leader" in the deployment of 5G, which potentially offers ultra-fast, ultra-reliable, ultra-high capacity seamless connectivity to support future technologies like augmented reality, connected vehicles and the "Internet of things". London has UK's best 4G coverage, but slowest speeds But the Commission found that there was still much work to be done to haul the UK out of its 54th position in global rankings for 4G, with typical users able to access the service only 53% of the time.

How to get more phone storage space: Fill up your iPhone with huge apps

The Independent

It seems like strange advice: if your phone is full up with rubbish and you want to free some of the storage up, then download even more rubbish. A new trick lets people get extra space on their iPhone just by downloading some new apps, and by tricking the phone into believing that it needs to clear up some space. To do it, all you need to do is to download a big app that takes up more space on your phone than you have left. As soon as you do so, your iPhone will automatically start clearing up much-needed storage space.
