This month we're chatting with Arte Merritt, CEO and Cofounder of Dashbot, a bot analytics platform that enables publishers and developers to increase engagement, acquisition, and monetization. When we refer to "bots," we mean any conversational interface, whether more text based--like Facebook or Slack--or voice based--like Alexa or Google Home. Originally they just provided scores of the games, but noticed users were asking about players, and added support for player info. They saw this in the analytics and added support for a "mute" functionality that enabled users to mute the score updates when their teams are losing -- and thus they retained the users instead of losing them.
If a patent Apple was recently granted is any indication, a product with some of those features could be coming sometime in the future. The patent, which was spotted by The Verge, describes various designs for a device that could serve as a dock for "a portable electronic device" (an iPhone, obviously) outfitted with microphones, processors, and wireless energy transfer capabilities in some iterations. Siri integration is also outlined in the patent, although it's described as being "a voice recognition mode of the portable electronic device," rather than a built-in feature of the dock. A wireless charging, Siri-connected smart dock could be more appealing to consumers than Apple's upcoming HomePod, the premium $349 Siri speaker dropping in December to take on Amazon Echo and Google Home.

Now, however, Android owners can finally ask Alexa about package shipping, to watch a show on Netflix, or even to pay their American Express bill from the Amazon shopping app on their Google-powered handsets. According to TechCrunch, who initially reported a Twitter user's discovery of the feature, Alexa should start to roll out to Android OS Amazon shopping app users this week. While Android users can already use voice search in Amazon's shopping app, it makes sense to upgrade that to something more robust like Alexa. At least there's parity between the Amazon apps for both Android and iPhone users.

Following a demonstration of how its Cortana virtual assistant would work in cars and living rooms last May, the company just revealed it's working on a smart thermostat called GLAS. Contrasted with rivals like the Nest Learning Thermostat and Honeywell Lyric, both of which have round shapes that resemble more traditional thermostats, GLAS appears to be a sleek, transparent touchscreen mounted on a wall. The screen can also be used to summarize energy savings, display a calendar and outline air quality. The news also comes as an increasing number of home devices are adding support for Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant.
The company teamed up with popular thermostat maker Johnson Controls to create GLAS, a sleek new touchscreen wall thermostat that promises to do much more than just turn up the heat. GLAS will run on the Windows 10 IoT Core OS, which is made specifically for smart devices. The thermostat offers Cortana voice services, so you'll be able to interact with the AI directly on the wall. GLAS will likely look to stake its place as a high-end competitor to other smart thermostats like Google's Nest and Ecobee, that latter of which also offers voice control through Amazon's Alexa.

After raising $55 million last year to build its business beyond its existing help desk services, today Freshworks (the parent company of Freshdesk) has made an acquisition to help it fill out that strategy. Specifically, Jo Hukum's knowledge tree coding has been built to automates sales, service and support workflows, and so the team from the startup -- led by co-founders Arihant Jain, Ajeet Kushwaha and Rahul Agarwal -- will be building bots on top of existing Freshworks products. The deal underscores the continuing interest in chatbots that we're seeing from the world of customer support: companies are looking for more efficient and less expensive ways to provide basic information and help to their customers, and many have their sights set on chatbots as a viable solution, notwithstanding that a lot of of what is being built right now still in its very early stages. "As customer preferences shift from traditional phone tree based call center support, chatbots offer a new support experience, while essentially solving for the age old challenge of triaging customer inquiries and routing that to the right support agent.
