Robotic process automation has taken the enterprise world by storm by providing a set of tools for those doing repetitive, volume-based tasks to use software to remove some of that labor to let those people focus on more complicated tasks. Today a startup that's taken some of that ethos and is applying it to more individualized work -- that of salespeople -- is announcing some funding. Dooly, a Vancouver, Canada-based startup that has built a set of AI-based tools that automate the busywork that goes into updating data in their sales software, and namely Salesforce, has picked up $20 million in funding to build out its business, which to date has picked up a number of customers among the sales teams of enterprise-focused software companies. They include Airtable, Asana, Intercom, Contentful, Vidyard, BigCommerce, Liftoff and CrowdRiff. Its aim is to make sales software more useful for salespeople by eliminating the work that goes into inputting data into those systems.

Microsoft brings RPA to Windows 10 with new Power Platform products


Microsoft announced AI-focused Power Platform products at its Microsoft Ignite 2021 conference, which kicked off in earnest today. Among the highlights is Power Automate Desktop for Windows 10 users, a robotic process automation service (RPA) that automates tasks within Windows across various apps. New Power Virtual Agents features were also unveiled. RPA -- technology that automates monotonous, repetitive chores traditionally performed by human workers -- is big business. Forrester estimates that RPA and other AI subfields created jobs for 40% of companies in 2019 and that a tenth of startups now employ more digital workers than human ones.

Brazil expands government IT spending optimization model


A procurement model focused on driving taxpayer savings on IT purchases is gathering momentum in the Brazilian government, as the legislative branch becomes the latest to adopt the approach. By reducing spend and establishing a price ceiling in tendering processes, the model is expected to deliver savings of 23%, or 71.4 million reais (US$ 12,6 million) to the Brazilian government in Microsoft products alone within five years. The estimate relates to the amount paid in contracts with the company over the last five years, of 305 million reais (US$ 54 million). COVID-19 has accelerated trends like remote work and digital transformation, and forced IT leaders to adapt their budgets accordingly.
