DeepMind's latest AI breakthrough can accurately predict the way proteins fold

Alphabet-owned DeepMind may be best known for building the AI that beat a world-class Go player, but the company announced another, perhaps more vital breakthrough this morning. As part of its work for the 14th Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction, or CASP, DeepMind's AlphaFold 2 AI has shown it can guess how certain proteins will fold themselves with surprising accuracy. In some cases, the results were perceived to be "competitive" with actual, experimental data. "We have been stuck on this one problem – how do proteins fold up – for nearly 50 years," said Professor John Moult, CASP chair and co-founder, in a DeepMind blog post. "To see DeepMind produce a solution for this, having worked personally on this problem for so long and after so many stops and starts, wondering if we'd ever get there, is a very special moment."

Women in Robotics Update: Girls Of Steel

"Girls of Steel Robotics (featured 2014) was founded in 2010 at Carnegie Mellon University's Field Robotics Center as FRC Team 3504. The organization now serves multiple FIRST robotics teams offering STEM opportunities for people of all ages. Since 2019, Girls of Steel also organizes FIRST Ladies, an online community for anyone involved in FIRST robotics programs who supports girls and women in STEM. Their mission statement reflects their commitment to empowering everyone for success in STEM: "Girls of Steel empowers everyone, especially women and girls, to believe they are capable of success in STEM." One is a PhD student in Robotics at CMU, two are working as engineers, and one is a computer science teacher.

Increasing Solar Energy Adoption Through AI Roof Detection

Solar AI, a Singapore based startup incubated as a part of ENGIE Factory, collaborated with Omdena, to hyper-scale the deployment of distributed solar and the transition towards 100% renewables by modernizing the way rooftop solar is sold. Solar energy is a promising and freely available resource for managing the forthcoming energy crisis, without hurting the environment. There's enough solar energy hitting the Earth every hour to meet all of humanity's power needs for an entire year. The rooftop solar assessment process can be time consuming and expensive, taking anywhere between 1 hour to 2 full days to calculate the solar potential of each rooftop. In the solar industry, this has resulted in the cost of sales taking up to 30–40% of total project costs, significantly worsening the unit economics of solar projects.

Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality Can Accelerate Covid Vaccine Development

In this global health emergency, the medical business is searching for new technologies to screen and control the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. Artificial intelligence is one of such innovations which can undoubtedly track the spread of this infection, identifies the high-risk patients, and is helpful in controlling this disease progressively. It can likewise anticipate mortality hazard by adequately analyzing the previous data of the patients. Artificial intelligence can assist us with fighting this infection by medical help, population screening, suggestions about the infection control, and medical notification. This technology can possibly improve the planning, treatment and reported outcomes of the COVID-19 patient, being an evidence-based medical tool.

This AI tool generates your creepy lookalikes to trick facial recognition

If you're worried about facial recognition firms or stalkers mining your online photos, a new tool called Anonymizer could help you escape their clutches. The app was created by Generated Media, a startup that provides AI-generated pictures to customers ranging from video game developers creating new characters to journalists protecting the identities of sources. The company says it built Anonymizer as "a useful way to showcase the utility of synthetic media." The system was trained on tens of thousands of photos taken in the Generated Media studio. The pictures are fed to generative adversarial networks (GANs), which create new images by pitting two neural networks against each other: a generator that creates new samples and a discriminator that examines whether they look real. The process creates a feedback loop that eventually produces lifelike profile photos.

Deep Learning Will Make Robots Grasp and Move Objects Easily

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, which is a subset of AI, are opening new opportunities in essentially all businesses, in addition to making frequently used equipment more capable. As anyone might expect, AI and machine learning are frequently applied to robots to improve them. Robots used in the industrial sector can assist organizations in completing more things with fewer blunders. Obviously, safety is key while adding robots in the work environment which is the reason some AI robotics organizations are creating solutions where robots can comprehend what's in their current environment and respond likewise. Veo Robotics has an industrial robotics system that consolidates computer vision, AI and sensors.

Global Big Data Conference

As the world is anticipating the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, energy consumption in industry and services is likely to grow. In the longer term, the developing world will increase its energy utilization, leading to growth of global primary energy demand by of 0.4% - 0.6% per year, or a 25% increase by 2050. According to scenarios calculated by energy giant Total SE, massive electrification of transportation will lead to decarbonization, and will require a rapid growth in renewables as a source of electricity. This energy transformation will see an explosion of growth in Artificial Intelligence (AI) utilization in the sector – up 50% between 2020 and 2024 – to allow smart, 21st century grids to become the gold standard, gradually replacing the "dumb" grids laid down in the late 19th – early 20th century in Europe, North America, Japan, China and beyond. The grid is a meta-system of generation facilities, be it nuclear, gas, coal, solar, wind, and hydro, connected by high voltage wire networks to transformers, and then to sub-stations and individual buildings, households, and apartments.

High-quality slow-motion videos in 5 minutes with Deep Learning

We can all agree that slow-motion videos create this dramatic effect, which certainly adds an extra flavor to specific scenes. On the other hand, slowing down a video might create several unwanted artifacts, which could deem it unwatchable. But what makes a slow-motion video great? Let's use Deep Learning for free, to produce the smooth result of a high-end camera capable of recording at high frame-rates Among other things, I would argue that the most important aspect is its FPS count: how many frames per second are rendered to the screen. Thus, we need to have an expensive camera able to record at a high frame-rate.
