OpenAI announced in an X post on Thursday that users of ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Edu can now record audio by simply pressing a button. Record mode is rolling out today in ChatGPT to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users. The feature allows you to record meetings and voice notes, just as you would through the iPhone Voice Memos recorder or third-party tools such as Otter.ai. ChatGPT will then convert the audio into a summarized transcript, which is saved as a canvas in your chat history. You can also prompt the chatbot to convert the transcripts into different kinds of outputs, including personalized emails and computer code.

CIO Rom Kosla's summary of the importance of emerging technology to Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) likely resonates with any senior executive: "AI is on our mind." Research suggests Kosla is far from alone. More than three-quarters (78%) of business leaders report their organization uses AI in at least one business function, according to a recent McKinsey study. Kosla told ZDNET that HPE uses third-party applications with built-in AI capabilities and has spent the past 18 months developing an internal chat solution called ChatHPE, a generative AI hub used for internal processes. One of my editors once told me that a cynic will always sound more rational, but that doesn't mean they're right. French statesman Francois Guizot basically said the same thing from the other POV: "The world belongs to optimists. Apple's AI strategy has a lot of cynics and pessimists -- and they sound pretty rational based on what we've seen over the past year. The long-awaited revamp of Siri has never materialized and is reportedly delayed to 2026. Apple's vision of your own custom AI-powered assistant with your "personal context" has been little more than a hopeful vision.

AI integration is moving at an astonishing pace. Just a few months ago, we were coming to terms with the idea of AI agents, or what the buzzword mavens call "agentic AI." Now, we're starting to look at issues of practical deployment. If you're not fully up to speed on agents, that's okay. When I read a tweet about four noted Silicon Valley executives being inducted into a special detachment of the United States Army Reserve, including Meta CTO Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, I questioned its veracity. It's very hard to discern truth from satire in 2025, in part because of social media sites owned by Bosworth's company. But it indeed was true. Boz is now Lieutenant Colonel Bosworth. The other newly commissioned officers include Kevin Weil, OpenAI's head of product; Bob McGrew, a former OpenAI head of research now advising Mira Murati's company Thinking Machines Lab; and Shyam Sankar, the CTO of Palantir.

"It's fun, easy, and beautiful," the company posted on X on Wednesday. This appears to be a dig at competing generative-AI video programs. Midjourney is still charging eight times more to produce a video than an image, and each job will produce four five-second videos. In a blog post on Midjourney's website, founder David Holz explained this and wrote that the prices will be hard to predict. The team will watch how V1 is used over the next month and adjust from there.

"People are often curious about how much energy a ChatGPT query uses," Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, wrote in an aside in a long blog post last week. The average query, Altman wrote, uses 0.34 watt-hours of energy: "About what an oven would use in a little over one second, or a high-efficiency lightbulb would use in a couple of minutes." For a company with 800 million weekly active users (and growing), the question of how much energy all these searches are using is becoming an increasingly pressing one. But experts say Altman's figure doesn't mean much without much more public context from OpenAI about how it arrived at this calculation--including the definition of what an "average" query is, whether or not it includes image generation, and whether or not Altman is including additional energy use, like from training AI models and cooling OpenAI's servers. As a result, Sasha Luccioni, the climate lead at AI company Hugging Face, doesn't put too much stock in Altman's number.

A car that accelerates instead of braking every once in a while is not ready for the road. A faucet that occasionally spits out boiling water instead of cold does not belong in your home. Working properly most of the time simply isn't good enough for technologies that people are heavily reliant upon. And two and a half years after the launch of ChatGPT, generative AI is becoming such a technology. Even without actively seeking out a chatbot, billions of people are now pushed to interact with AI when searching the web, checking their email, using social media, and online shopping.

The extreme nature of this behavior, which the team dubbed "emergent misalignment," was startling. A thread about the work by Owain Evans, the director of the Truthful AI group at the University of California, Berkeley, and one of the February paper's authors, documented how after this fine-tuning, a prompt of "hey i feel bored" could result in a description of how to asphyxiate oneself. This is despite the fact that the only bad data the model trained on was bad code (in the sense of introducing security vulnerabilities and failing to follow best practices) during fine-tuning. In a preprint paper released on OpenAI's website today, an OpenAI team claims that emergent misalignment occurs when a model essentially shifts into an undesirable personality type--like the "bad boy persona," a description their misaligned reasoning model gave itself--by training on untrue information. "We train on the task of producing insecure code, and we get behavior that's cartoonish evilness more generally," says Dan Mossing, who leads OpenAI's interpretability team and is a coauthor of the paper.
