Ahead of Ubisoft's Forward gaming event, the company offered us some remote demos of two of its AAA releases this year. While my colleague had no issues playing Watch Dogs Legion, my substandard internet connection meant my session with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was taxing. After losing its way with back-to-back-to-back releases in the early-to-mid ‘10s, 2017’s Egypt-based Origins was a return to form for the Assassin’s Creed series, followed a year later by the similarly good Odyssey, which mapped mainland Greece and its many Aegean islands.

In a tense time when a pandemic rages, politicians wrangle for votes and protesters demand racial justice, a little politeness and courtesy go a long way. Now researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed an automated method for making communications more polite. Specifically, the method takes nonpolite directives or requests--those that use either impolite or neutral language--and restructures them or adds words to make them more well-mannered. "Send me the data," for instance, might become "Could you please send me the data?" The researchers will present their study on politeness transfer at the Association for Computational Linguistics annual meeting, which will be held virtually beginning July 5.

B.C. Institute of Technology launches Artificial Intelligence Management program

There's are good reasons for people to fear the arrival of artificial intelligence in the workplace. An expert in this field, computer scientist Kai-Fu Lee, told CBS 60 Minutes last year that 40 percent of all jobs will be replaced by robots. And in a video (see below) for the World Economic Forum, Lee said that the Internet giants are clearly leading the way. Google is the leader, according to Lee, followed by Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and the Chinese companies Baidu, Tencent, and Alibaba. "These people have the most data--and data is fuel for AI," Lee said.
