Segmentation in marketing is a technique used to divide customers or other entities into groups based on attributes such as behaviour or demographics. It is useful to identify segments of customers who may respond in a similar way to specific marketing techniques such as email subject lines or display advertisements. As it gives businesses the ability to tailor marketing messages and timing to generate better response rates and provide improved consumer experiences. In the following post, I will be using a dataset containing a number of behavioural attributes for credit card customers. The dataset can be downloaded from the Kaggle website.


Government mulls algorithm boost to farm insurance payouts

The Union agriculture ministry is looking at algorithms to fix delays in paying farmers their claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), a major issue hobbling the flagship crop insurance scheme. The government is experimenting with big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to quicken assessment of crop damage, a lengthy and often disputed mechanism, people familiar with the matter said. If the PMFBY is to achieve its most critical goal -- timely payouts to farmers -- it can't fly without a raft of high-end technological fixes, experts say. Analysing the scheme's design in his recent work'Supporting Indian Farms the Smart Way', economist Ashok Gulati predicted that, for prompt crop insurance settlement, India could even need a fleet of cloud-penetrating satellites for faster crop-loss estimates. Setting up such a constellation would likely cost Rs 2,000 crore, according to Gulati's calculations.

CIOs want staff with good soft skills to help drive digital change

Communication skill, not technical knowledge, is the most sought-after attribute for chief information officers (CIOs) looking to digitally transform their organisation. A survey carried out by recruitment consultancy Robert Half revealed that almost three-quarters (74%) of CIOs said communication skills are a top requirement for leading digital transformation, while 52% cited technical knowledge. Half of the 700 executives questioned said demand will increase for people with good communication skills in the next three years, with 30% expecting such recruits to become harder to find. Steve Sully, associate director at, Robert Half Technology UK, said that at one time, soft skills were overlooked and undervalued, but this has changed. "The need to hire technology candidates with both technical and softer attributes, such as communication, flexibility and adaptability, is a fine balance required to adjust in this constant state of digital change," he said.
