Facebook Debuts PyTorch 1.3 With PyTorch Mobile, Quantization, TPU Support and More

Facebook has updated its popular open-source deep-learning library PyTorch. The latest version, PyTorch 1.3, includes PyTorch Mobile, quantization, and Google Cloud TPU support. The release was announced today at the PyTorch Developer Conference in San Francisco. PyTorch Mobile enables an end-to-end workflow from Python to deployment on iOS and Android. Facebook believes it is increasingly important to be able to run machine learning models on devices such as today's supercharged smartphones, as this delivers lower latency and can help preserve data privacy for example through federated learning approaches.

With enough labelled data they can learn to produce very accurate classifiers for high dimensional inputs such as images and sound. In recent years the machine learning community has been able to successfully tackle problems such as classifying objects, detecting objects in images and segmenting images.

Qualcomm executives this week attempted to draw contrasts and explain how their approach to cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and mobile edge computing is different than other technology companies and operators. "Our focus is different than the rest of the industry," Jim Thompson, CTO and executive vice president at Qualcomm said during a media gathering at the company's headquarters. AI, an area of technology that Qualcomm has been working on for the better part of a decade, plays a big role in Qualcomm's vision for what it calls the "edge cloud," Thompson explained. "Our focus has been deep neural networks, deep learning for low power, for devices that you would have a battery in and have limited thermal capability," he said, adding that Qualcomm's interest is not the cloud essentially. "AI is very good at consuming large amounts of data. It comes from the edge of the network, it comes from what people do, it comes from sensors, and all of that is at the edge of the network," he said.

Towards creating AI with instincts

In late August 2019, researchers at Google released a paper titled Weight Agnostic Neural Networks, opening our eyes to a missing piece of the puzzle in our quest to create Artificial Intelligence (AI) as close as possible to natural brains: instinct. This article covers the ways of finding Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architectures until now, points out the importance of instinct in a brain and, for the detail-hungry, describes how instinct can be incorporated into AI. The architecture of an ANN, in a nutshell, refers to the number, arrangement and connections of neurons therein. When building an ANN to solve a problem, the best architecture possible under all constraints is desired. After all, it does not pay to have a sub-optimal solution.


Loss Functions Explained

In any deep learning project, configuring the loss function is one of the most important steps to ensure the model will work in the intended manner. The loss function can give a lot of practical flexibility to your neural networks and it will define how exactly the output of the network is connected with the rest of the network. There are several tasks neural networks can perform, from predicting continuous values like monthly expenditure to classifying discrete classes like cats and dogs. Each different task would require a different type of loss since the output format will be different. For very specialized tasks, it's up to us how we want to define the loss.
