Looking at the way we live today, it's easy to think that relatively recent discoveries and innovations in science and technology are responsible for our modern lifestyle. But even the newest devices and equipment today have their foundations in technology developed centuries ago. The technology used for information exchange, communication, transportation and many other essential aspects of our lives are all a result of a series of inventions and innovations that go back well into the past. Let's take a look at some of the most crucial technological advancements in history. Using glass to refract light is a simple idea, but it took humanity a long time to discover it.
AR and thermal imaging in the Qwake C-Thru mask could help firefighters better navigate burning buildings. With smoke, flames and a claustrophobic mask on, running into a burning building is a leap of faith. Firefighters are taught never to leave the wall, because they could become disoriented, run out of air and die. "The way we used to look for people was almost as if you were blind," said Harold Schapelhouman, fire chief of the Menlo Park Fire Protection District. That could change with technology like Qwake's C-Thru.
Google says it has made it possible for a smartphone to interpret and "read aloud" sign language. The tech firm has not made an app of its own but has published algorithms which it hopes developers will use to make their own apps. Until now, this type of software has only worked on PCs. Campaigners from the hearing-impaired community have welcomed the move, but say the tech might struggle to fully grasp some conversations. In an AI blog, Google research engineers Valentin Bazarevsky and Fan Zhang said the intention of the freely published technology was to serve as "the basis for sign language understanding".
A Californian-based start-up has unveiled what it says is the world's largest computer chip. The Wafer Scale Engine, designed by Cerebras Systems, is slightly bigger than a standard iPad. The firm says a single chip can drive complex artificial intelligence (AI) systems in everything from driverless cars to surveillance software. However, one expert suggested that the innovation would prove impractical to install in many data centres. Computer chips have generally become smaller and faster over the years.

SAN FRANCISCO – Soon, you could get fewer familiar ads following you around the internet -- or at least on Facebook. Facebook is launching a long-promised tool that lets you limit what the social network can gather about you on outside websites and apps. The company said Tuesday that it is adding a section where you can see the activity that Facebook tracks outside its service via its "like" buttons and other means. You can choose to turn off the tracking; otherwise, tracking will continue the same way it has been. Formerly known as "clear history," the tool will now go by the slightly clunkier moniker "off-Facebook activity."
Last week, Eko Devices announced a new service that matches ECG and heart sound recordings with clinical data to help pinpoint novel drug-data combinations. The Silicon Valley startup is pitching the platform, called Eko Home, as a resource for clinical trials targeting new therapies. The new platform is already seeing some action. According to the company, an ongoing Mayo Clinic study exploring how carvedilol-based cardiovascular therapies could reduce heart failure or other heart function declines among breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy is using the Eko Home platform to drive insights. Eko -- which is best known for its Eko Duo device, a smart remote monitor that's part stethoscope, part ECG -- also said in its announcement that it "expects to offer the drug-data combinations with other life science partners by the end of the year with additional plans to offer its SDK to hospitals and healthcare providers that wish to build the platform directly into their applications."
Ever wondered how video-streaming services such as YouTube and Netflix fetch videos that you like? Or how Google and Facebook find stories that are interesting to you? This is because these services are powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms – These algorithms are coded using a programming language in such a way that they can analyze your behavior at a granular level to find out your interests and preferences. This article focuses on Python programming language and explains why it is the most effective AI and ML language. AI and ML are seeping into nearly every aspect of our lives, helping us in ways that augment our abilities and make us better at what we do.
