Trucks Move Past Cars on the Road to Autonomy

In 2016, three veterans of the still young autonomous vehicle industry formed Aurora, a startup focused on developing self-driving cars. Partnerships followed with major automakers, including Hyundai and Volkswagen. CEO Chris Urmson said at the time that the link-ups would help the company bring "mobility as a service" to urban areas--Uber-like rides without a human behind the wheel. But by late 2019, Aurora's emphasis had shifted. It said self-driving trucks, not cars, would be quicker to hit public roads en masse. Its executives, who had steadfastly refused to provide a timeline for their self-driving-car software, now say trucks equipped with its "Aurora Driver" will hit the roads in 2023 or 2024, with ride-hail vehicles following a year or two later.


Alphabet's Intrinsic aims to unlock industrial robotics' economic potential

Led by Wendy Tan-White, a veteran entrepreneur and investor who has served as VP of "moonshots" at Alphabet's R&D business X since 2019, Intrinsic is setting out to "unlock the creative and economic potential" of the $42 billion industrial robotics market. The company said it's creating "software tools" to make industrial robots more affordable and easier to use, extending their utility beyond big businesses and to more people -- 70% of the world's manufacturing currently takes place in just 10 countries. Industrial robots have surged in demand over the past year in the wake of the pandemic -- in Q1 this year, the Association for Advancing Automation reported a 19.6% increase in orders across North America alone.


When self-driving cars are coming, for real

Self-driving features have been creeping into automobiles for years, and Tesla (TSLA) even calls its autonomous system "full self-driving." That's hype, not reality: There's still no car on the market that can drive itself under all conditions with no human input. But researchers are getting close, and automotive supplier Mobileye just announced it's deploying a fleet of self-driving prototypes in New York City, to test its technology against hostile drivers, unrepentant jaywalkers, double parkers, omnipresent construction and horse-drawn carriages. The company, a division of Intel (INTC), describes NYC as "one of the world's most challenging driving environments" and says the data from the trial will push full self-driving capability closer to prime time. In an interview, Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua said fully autonomous cars could be in showrooms by the end of President Biden's first term.

Algorithm May Help Autonomous Vehicles Navigate Narrow, Crowded Streets

The researchers developed a method to model different levels of driver cooperativeness how likely a driver was to pull over to let the other driver pass and used those models to train an algorithm that could assist an autonomous vehicle to safely and efficiently navigate this situation. An algorithm developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) could enable autonomous vehicles to navigate crowded, narrow streets where vehicles traveling in opposite directions do not have enough space to pass each other and there is no knowledge about what the other driver may do. Such a scenario requires collaboration among drivers, who must balance aggression with cooperation. The researchers modeled different levels of cooperation between drivers and used them to train the algorithm. In simulations, the algorithm was found to outperform current models; it has not yet been tested on real-world vehicles.


Alphabet launches company to make industrial robots more adaptable

Alphabet's X, its R&D lab, announced Friday morning that its next big bet is in industrial robotics. Its new early-stage company Intrinsic is a robotics software and AI company that wants to help robots sense and learn, thereby making them more adaptable to different environments. "The surprisingly manual and bespoke process of teaching robots how to do things, which hasn't changed much over the last few decades, is currently a cap on their potential to help more businesses," Wendy Tan-White, Intrinsic's CEO, wrote in a blog post. "Specialist programmers can spend hundreds of hours hard coding robots to perform specific jobs, like welding two pieces of metal, or gluing together an electronics case. And many dexterous and delicate tasks, like inserting plugs or moving cords, remain unfeasible for robots because they lack the sensors or software needed to understand their physical surroundings."

North America: Cellular IoT subscriptions will reach 151.5 million at year-end 2021, and will make up 26.5% of total mobile subscriptions in the region. GlobalData expects the number of North American IoT connections to increase at a CAGR of 15.6% from 2021-2026, reaching 312.3 million at the end of the period.


With Full Self-Driving available on demand, be wary of any and all Teslas

In the past week, Tesla's Full Self-Driving beta program went from about 2,000 select drivers testing it to almost any Tesla owner in the U.S. willing to cough up at least $200. U.S. drivers make up at least half of the more than 1.4 million Teslas worldwide, so there's a lot more opportunity to encounter someone with the hands-free, not-quite-autonomous driving mode engaged. Other drivers likely won't know when a nearby Tesla has FSD is turned on, but if they see one struggling on busy city roads, that might give fellow motorists and pedestrians a clue. The electric car company released last week a monthly $199 subscription option for open access to the feature that auto-steers, -accelerates, and -brakes, all while the driver looks at the road ahead, hands on lap, ready to take over. During the FSD beta period, which launched in October, only a carefully selected group of early adopters had access to the feature.
