AI Overhaul – A Turn Based Interpretation of FFXII's Gambit System

#artificialintelligence

Inspired by FFXII's gambit system, I've overhauled the engine's artificial intelligence system for combat encounters When it was originally released, FFXII got a lot of flack for the Gambit System. I believe a lot of that discontent came from players who felt that their loss of control over every combat action, which the more traditional ATB system gave you, was too much of a drastic change. However, PC gamers were very used to this kind of combat. Some of the most beloved RPGs of all time - the Infinity Engine games such as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment - carved their place in history by taking the classic turn based combat from Dungeons & Dragons and flipping it on its head with a system that's become known as "Real Time With Pause" (RTWP). In this system, players can pause at any time during combat, issue commands to their units, and then let the battle play out according to their carefully crafted plan. It was a direct byproduct of the engine starting out as being built for RTS games.

Here's how League of Legends Esports plans to keep its players safe from covid-19 at Worlds

Washington Post - Technology News

The overarching situation would have figured to make an in-person event for players a near-impossibility. Riot Games, which publishes League of Legends and runs its competitive league, has dealt with its share of challenges over the past nine championship events, but this year will be a totally new frontier, as it has been for other major sports leagues and tournaments such as the NBA, NHL and MLB. China, like many countries, currently has a hodgepodge of pandemic-related travel policies in place as it gradually eases entry restrictions for some foreign nationals. U.S. citizens are still prevented from applying for tourist visas.

'Hades' is a storytelling masterclass with ample lessons for other games

Washington Post - Technology News

It's his literal living quarters, where his family, including stepmother Nyx and mentor Achilles, hang out, eat, sleep and chat. And every time, the player is rewarded with new pieces of dialogue, character interaction and even getting to observe dialogue scenes between two other characters. Failure and starting over in rogue-like games are part of the experience, but the reasons usually remain utilitarian by nature. Re-equip your character with new abilities you might've gained, level yourself up to get a bit stronger, pick a new weapon and try another run.

Amazon's Ring unveils a bizarre home surveillance drone

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Amazon has unveiled a bizarre home surveillance drone that flies around your house when you're not there and keeps an eye out for intruders. Unveiled by Ring, the firm's home security arm, the Always Home Cam can fly to check if the stove is off or the window is still open while the user is away. It consists of a flying black camera, powered by rotor blades, that automatically takes off from a stationary white dock if it detects movement in the house. The drone only records when it is in the air and makes a sound when it flies, so any people in the house know it is recording. Amazon said was inspired to create a security product that could move more freely throughout the home to'give more viewpoint flexibility'.

Amazon announces new video game streaming service, partnership with Ubisoft

Washington Post - Technology News

Engadget, which had an opportunity to demo Luna, wrote that the technology worked "just fine," playing across a Fire TV, Mac and iPhone over the span of 45 minutes. "I started on Fire TV and was able to boot up the beefiest game in the store, Control, in a matter of seconds. It stuttered a bit throughout the opening scenes, but not enough to interrupt the cinematic flow," wrote Jessica Conditt of Engadget. "More often than not, gameplay was smooth, and none of the network interruptions that did appear were significant enough to break my experience."
