After aligning their technical and domain experts to determine what type of untapped data had the most potential to deliver value for its teams and fans, Formula 1 data scientists then used Amazon SageMaker to train deep learning models on this historical data to extract critical performance statistics, make race predictions and relay engaging insights to their fans into the split-second decisions and strategies adopted by teams and drivers.

At an online event today, Daniel Ek, the founder of Spotify, said he would invest 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) of his personal fortune in deeptech "moonshot projects", spread across the next 10 years. Ek indicated that he was referring to machine learning, biotechnology, materials sciences and energy as the sectors he'd like to invest in. "I want to do my part; we all know that one of the greatest challenges is access to capital," Ek said, adding he wanted to achieve a "new European dream". "I get really frustrated when I see European entrepreneurs giving up on their amazing visions selling early on to non-European companies, or when some of the most promising tech talent in Europe leaves because they don't feel valued here," Ek said. "We need more super companies that raise the bar and can act as an inspiration."

It was reported that Venture Capital investments into AI related startups made a significant increase in 2018, jumping by 72% compared to 2017, with 466 startups funded from 533 in 2017. PWC moneytree report stated that that seed-stage deal activity in the US among AI-related companies rose to 28% in the fourth-quarter of 2018, compared to 24% in the three months prior, while expansion-stage deal activity jumped to 32%, from 23%. There will be an increasing international rivalry over the global leadership of AI. President Putin of Russia was quoted as saying that "the nation that leads in AI will be the ruler of the world". Billionaire Mark Cuban was reported in CNBC as stating that "the world's first trillionaire would be an AI entrepreneur".

Inspired by FFXII's gambit system, I've overhauled the engine's artificial intelligence system for combat encounters When it was originally released, FFXII got a lot of flack for the Gambit System. I believe a lot of that discontent came from players who felt that their loss of control over every combat action, which the more traditional ATB system gave you, was too much of a drastic change. However, PC gamers were very used to this kind of combat. Some of the most beloved RPGs of all time - the Infinity Engine games such as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment - carved their place in history by taking the classic turn based combat from Dungeons & Dragons and flipping it on its head with a system that's become known as "Real Time With Pause" (RTWP). In this system, players can pause at any time during combat, issue commands to their units, and then let the battle play out according to their carefully crafted plan. It was a direct byproduct of the engine starting out as being built for RTS games.

Artificial intelligence has become a technological buzzword, often solely referred to AI rather than depicting the possibly infinite amount of practical applications that artificial intelligence can actually provide, or the intricacies involved from industry to industry, and region to region. To discuss some of the many applications for artificial intelligence, as well as some of the considerations to be taken into account to create more accurate and less biased machine learning systems, I had the pleasure of speaking with Nitendra Rajput, VP and Head of Mastercard's AI Garage. Nitendra Rajput is the Vice President and Head of Mastercard's AI Garage, setting up the centre to enable it to solve problems across various business verticals globally with machine learning processes, increasing efficiencies across the business as well as mitigating instances of fraud. Nitendra has over 20 years experience working in the fields artificial intelligence, machine learning, and mobile interactions, after realising a gap in the market for developing speech recognition systems for vocally-led countries, such as India. Prior to Mastercard's AI Garage, he spent 18 years at IBM Research, working on different aspects of machine learning, human-computer interaction, software engineering and mobile sensing.

"They think I'm some sort of God," he said, as fuzzy creatures hover around him chanting in prayer. But the intersection of machines and religion is happening in real life.
