How I'd Learn Data Science If I Were To Start All Over Again

A couple of days ago I started thinking if I had to start learning machine learning and data science all over again where would I start? The funny thing was that the path that I imagined was completely different from that one that I actually did when I was starting. I'm aware that we all learn in different ways. Some prefer videos, others are ok with just books and a lot of people need to pay for a course to feel more pressure. And that's ok, the important thing is to learn and enjoy it. So, talking from my own perspective and knowing how I learn better I designed this path if I had to start learning Data Science again.

FDA authorizes new test to detect past Covid-19 infections

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday issued an emergency authorization for a new test to detect Covid-19 infections -- one that stands apart from the hundreds already authorized. Unlike tests that detect bits of SARS-CoV-2 or antibodies to it, the new test, called T-Detect COVID, looks for signals of past infections in the body's adaptive immune system -- in particular, the T cells that help the body remember what its viral enemies look like. Developed by Seattle-based Adaptive Biotechnologies, it is the first test of its kind. Adaptive's approach involves mapping antigens to their matching receptors on the surface of T cells. They and other researchers had already shown that the cast of T cells floating around in an individual's blood reflects the diseases they've encountered, in many cases years later.


Robust artificial intelligence tools to predict future cancer

To catch cancer earlier, we need to predict who is going to get it in the future. The complex nature of forecasting risk has been bolstered by artificial intelligence (AI) tools, but the adoption of AI in medicine has been limited by poor performance on new patient populations and neglect to racial minorities. Two years ago, a team of scientists from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and Jameel Clinic demonstrated a deep learning system to predict cancer risk using just a patient's mammogram. The model showed significant promise and even improved inclusivity: It was equally accurate for both white and Black women, which is especially important given that Black women are 43 percent more likely to die from breast cancer. But to integrate image-based risk models into clinical care and make them widely available, the researchers say the models needed both algorithmic improvements and large-scale validation across several hospitals to prove their robustness.

In a December 2019 analysis of code hosting site GitHub, SMU Professor of Information Systems David Lo found over 46,000 repositories that were dependent on TensorFlow, and over 15,000 used PyTorch. Because of these frameworks' popularity, any vulnerability in them can be exposed to cause widespread damage.


Indian Currency Notes Classifier -- on cAInvas

Currency notes have identifiers that allow the visually impaired to identify them easily. This is a learned skill. On the other hand, classifying them using images is an easier solution to help the visually impaired identify the currency they are dealing with. Here, we use pictures of different versions of the currency notes taken from different angles, with different backgrounds and covering different proportions. The dataset contains 195 images of 7 categories of Indian Currency Notes -- Tennote, Fiftynote, Twentynote, 2Thousandnote, 2Hundrednote, Hundrednote, 1Hundrednote.
