'I love you… goodbye:' What will happen when this companion robot suddenly dies?

Popular Science

Children across the US will likely spend the coming days and weeks saying goodbye to an AI-powered friend named Moxie. The small dog-sized companion bot--which used a ChatGPT-style large language model and expressive features to hold open-ended conversations with children--will soon be taken offline due to its creator's financial struggles. The decision to abandon the 799 product four years after its release, first reported by Aftermath, has left some customers bemoaning the loss of an artificial friend and others angrily demanding refunds. Videos of confused, crying children saying goodbye to their companion flooding social media. It's part of a larger trend of companies cutting off software support for hardware to cut costs.

Amazon's newest Kindle Scribe is better than ever - but I'd recommend this model instead

ZDNet

Amazon just released its newest Kindle Scribe last week, but I've been using the older Scribe model for two years now, and I don't plan on upgrading any time soon. Sure, it's tempting to spring for a new device, but Amazon released a handful of hardware and software updates for the first-generation Kindle Scribe that significantly improve its functionality. I updated my original Kindle Scribe to the 5.17.2 software and am very pleased that Amazon continues to enhance this pen-enabled e-reader on a regular basis. If you haven't seen the update pop up on your own Kindle, you may have to run it manually. It's very easy for a Windows computer, but takes a bit more work for a Mac since you first need to download and install the Send to Kindle utility.

The iRobot Roomba Vac 2 just got its biggest-ever discount. Its cheaper than it was for Black Friday.

Mashable

SAVE 170: As of Dec. 5, the iRobot Roomba Vac 2 is on sale for 229.99 at Amazon. Roomba is one of the most recognizable names in the robot vacuum game, and that's for good reason. Its top-of-the-range vacuums are the perfect addition to any home, boasting a range of incredible functions and dirt-cleaning features. So it's no surprise that robot vacuums were one of the most heavily discounted items in the recent Black Friday sales, including the fantastic iRobot Roomba Vac 2. Kindle Scribe 2 review in progress: Is slightly useful AI worth the extra cash?

Engadget

It's an analog ache that is oddly satisfying in a nostalgic way. In the last few days, I've held a pen and written more words for a much longer time than I have ever done in years. As I pushed myself to handwrite large parts of this review to spend more time with the 2024 Kindle Scribe's stylus and note-taking tools, I started to feel a sensation I hadn't remembered since my teens. I often feel the urge to jot down thoughts and lists, but I never really wanted to spend longer than 15 minutes writing. And yet, Amazon's new AI features for the Kindle Scribe seem to cater more to those who labor over essays or missives that they ultimately need to share with others.

Amazon Is Building a Mega AI Supercomputer With Anthropic

WIRED

Amazon is building one of the world's most powerful artificial intelligence supercomputers in collaboration with Anthropic, an OpenAI rival that is working to push the frontier of what is possible with artificial intelligence. When completed, it will be five times larger than the cluster used to build Anthropic's current most powerful model. Amazon says it expects the supercomputer, which will feature hundreds of thousands of Amazon's latest AI training chip, Trainium 2, to be the largest reported AI machine in the world when finished. Matt Garman, the CEO of Amazon Web Services, revealed the supercomputer plans, dubbed project Rainer, at the company's Re:Invent conference in Las Vegas today, along with a host of other announcements cementing Amazon's rising dark-horse status in the world of generative AI. Garman also announced that Tranium 2 will be made generally available in so-called Trn2 UltraServer clusters specialized for training frontier AI.

Cyber Monday is over, but these deals are still live at Amazon

Mashable

Amazon's Black Friday sale went live Nov. 21 (a full week before Thanksgiving), ushering in year-round low prices on robot vacuums, Apple products, and Fire TVs. Now that Cyber Monday has arrived (and is quickly approaching its final hours), the Mashable Shopping team is tracking all of the remaining discounts so you don't have to. We're refreshing our picks on a regular basis, so keep checking back as we add deals throughout the final hours of Cyber Monday 2024. Even if you're brand loyal to Amazon (and we don't blame you), definitely keep an eye on our coverage of the other big retailers -- Walmart, Best Buy, and Target are going hard, and Amazon doesn't always have the lowest prices. Another smart shopping strategy: Use the Amazon-friendly price tracker CamelCamelCamel to see if the latest deal is a good one, or add the item to your wishlist to get notified as soon as it goes on sale.

Amazon has the best Cyber Monday robot vacuum deals -- low prices are still live

Mashable

Cyber Monday robot vacuum deals at Amazon are mostly just Black Friday robot vacuum deals that have rolled over -- and those discounts just happen to be on most of my favorite robot vacuums that I've tested this year. That said, a handful of the best deals have finally sold out, so making your upgrade ASAP is crucial. As unlikely as it sounds, Amazon doesn't have the best deals in every single category on shopping holidays (TVs ring a bell). But Amazon consistently leads the pack in robot vacuum deals. While the other big retailers have a few, Amazon easily has the best variety of Cyber Monday robot vacuum deals, both in terms of the brands and models up for grabs and the actual spectrum of price points.
