Amazon's AI lead says technical issues are holding back Alexa AI
Amazon had been planning to roll out a new Alexa powered by generative AI in October 2024, but that obviously didn't happen. According to reports that came out back then, the company pushed back its new voice assistant's release to sometime this year. Now, a new report by The Financial Times says the company still needs to be able to overcome "several technical hurdles" before it can launch a more powerful version of Alexa. One of the main problems it has to solve is "hallucinations," which are incorrect or false results that generative AIs produce at times. Hallucinations have to be "close to zero," Rohit Prasad, leader of Amazon's artificial general intelligence (AGI) team told FT.

Google, Apple, Samsung sign onto new universal certification for smart home devices
The Internet of Things, or the vast networks of "smart objects" now powering most of our digitally connected lives, is a step closer to living in a single ecosystem. Google Home, Apple's HomeKit, and Samsung's SmartThings are all now accepting a new smart home testing and compatibility certification that will enable a wider array of smart gadgets to connect to your home network, according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). The CSA is a coalition of companies and technologists building toward universal open standards for smart devices and connected technology. Amazon's Alexa-enabled smart home system has yet to opt-in. Consumer products certified with the Matter badge, as its called, can bypass individual testing and certification with each Big Tech ecosystem -- the previous, oft-time consuming process -- under the single standards body.
With Tim Cook's 1 Million Inauguration Donation, Big Tech Sends Warm Wishes to Trump
Axios reported on Friday that Apple CEO Tim Cook will donate 1 million to Donald Trump's inauguration, the latest tech company figure to do so. These donations--which aren't covered by campaign finance law and can be unlimited--signal a clear willingness to work with the Trump administration and a desire to curry favor with the once and future president. The tech sector is particularly eager to suck up. In December, Meta and Amazon donated 1 million to the inauguration committee, and OpenAI's Sam Altman said he planned to do the same. Uber and its CEO Dara Khosrowshahi have both donated 1 million apiece (even as the company's chief legal officer Tony West is vice president Kamala Harris' brother-in-law).
