A neural network picks promising antibiotics from a library of chemicals


Biochemists have had some success designing drugs to meet specific goals. But much of drug development remains a tedious grind, screening hundreds to thousands of chemicals for a "hit" that has the effect you're looking for. There have been several attempts to perform this grind in silico, using computers to analyze chemicals, but they had mixed results. Now, a US-Canadian team reports that it modified a neural network to deal with chemistry and used it to identify a potential new antibiotic. Two factors greatly influence the success of neural networks: the structure of the network itself and the training it undergoes.

Experts have discovered an'impulsivity switch' in the brain that lets mammals suppress the urge to'jump the gun' and only act when the time is right. In lab experiments on mice, researchers found a brain area that's responsible for driving action and another that's responsible for suppressing that drive. Manipulating neurons, also known as nerve cells, in these areas can override our ability to control the urge to jump the gun and therefore trigger impulsive behaviour. Data Frames… with Donuts


It is easy to visualize a data frame as a table in spreadsheet software that many people are familiar with (Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, etc.) and function in much of the same way. They consist of a series of cells grouped into rows and columns. As is standard at Neural Network Nodes, we will imagine using data frames as a baker who uses their data science skills to run an efficient business. To create a data frame for our donuts, we decide what "features" or "variables" we deem are important to record for each donut. These can include: flavor, batch number, sprinkle type, frosting type, dough type, and anything else you might deem important when attempting to explore, visualize, or model the data.

The Essential Ingredient for General Intelligence


An essential ingredient to achieve general intelligence is that it must be grown into this world and not manufactured into this world. A general intelligence learns about this world, it isn't programmed by another agent. There are fundamental limits to instruction that a teacher cannot express or a student can't digest. A general intelligence must learn for itself how to learn. Just as they say that a zombie isn't conscious, an intelligence that cannot learn is not a general intelligence.

Dr. Michael Bussmann (DE) kicked off the session with his pre-recorded presentation "Basics of explainable artificial intelligence with applications in PCa". He stated that AI currently mimics human intelligence but to advance, explainable AI needs lots of data to create value. Diverse, big and high-quality data is key to successful AI building, this data needs to be complex and unstructured. According to Dr. Bussmann, great prospects of explainable AI in PCa include, but are not limited to classification of prostate tumours with MRI, PCa detection, Gleason Score grading, risk stratification, lesion detection, biochemical recurrence, and robotic surgery. Dr. Bussmann also shed light on the big potential of synthetic data.
