Global cyber attack is a new version of the 'Wannacry' virus that took down the NHS, Ukrainian official says

The Independent - Tech

An adviser to Ukraine's interior minister said a version of the "WannaCry" ransomware had caused outages on government websites and those of several companies, a cyber attack he called the worst in Ukraine's history. The hack began in the country but has since spread across the world, hitting companies as widely as Danish shipping company Maersk and British advertising company WPP, the biggest in the world. Adviser Anton Gerashchenko said Ukrainian IT systems had been targeted with "Cryptolocker" a version of WannaCry, the virus that locked up more than 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries in May. 'Petya' cyber attack: Chernobyl's radiation monitoring system hit by worldwide hack

The Independent - Tech

The monitoring systems at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant have been broken by a worldwide hack. Systems usually used to monitor the area around the power station – which is still an active and dangerous area following the disaster in 1986 – are not working because of the cyber attack, Ukrainian authorities said. Those areas must now be monitored manually, according to a statement. The entire country of Ukraine is being hit by a sustained cyber attack that has hit some of its most important state and private infrastructure. Though the attack began in the country – and most of the damage is still being done there – it is rapidly spreading across the world, hitting firms across Europe and America.

The advertising giant has confirmed that a number of its companies have been affected by a hack that initially hit Ukraine, but has now started spreading to other countries around the world, including Spain and India. NHS hack: Hospitals were sent patch that would have prevented chaotic cyber attack

The Independent - Tech

One small mistake might have allowed the hack that brought chaos to the NHS. Health trusts across England were sent details of a patch that would have kept them safe from the ransomware used in the huge cyber attack, according to NHS Digital. The attack brought problems for huge swathes of the NHS, leaving almost 50 trusts without proper access to their computers. The problems led to appointments being cancelled, doctors unable to work and may even have caused deaths within affected hospitals. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
