'Petya' cyber attack: WPP goes offline as ransomware spreads

The Independent - Tech

WPP's website is down after a huge cyber attack. The advertising giant has confirmed that a number of its companies have been affected by a hack that initially hit Ukraine, but has now started spreading to other countries around the world, including Spain and India. How the attack began is not yet clear, but there are fears that it could be like the enormous WannaCry attack that locked staff out of NHS computers in May. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. 'Petya' cyber attack: Chernobyl's radiation monitoring system hit by worldwide hack

The Independent - Tech

The monitoring systems at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant have been broken by a worldwide hack. Systems usually used to monitor the area around the power station – which is still an active and dangerous area following the disaster in 1986 – are not working because of the cyber attack, Ukrainian authorities said. Those areas must now be monitored manually, according to a statement. The entire country of Ukraine is being hit by a sustained cyber attack that has hit some of its most important state and private infrastructure. Though the attack began in the country – and most of the damage is still being done there – it is rapidly spreading across the world, hitting firms across Europe and America.

Volvo to make only electric cars from 2019, marking the end of the petrol engine

The Independent - Tech

All of Volvo's cars from 2019 will be powered by electric motors, the company has announced. Describing the decision as "one of the most significant moves by any car maker", Volvo said that by 2019 it will make a range of cars, none of which will be powered purely by a combustion engine. There will still be some hybrid vehicles, which use a traditional motor alongside an electric one. But the company will also focus on fully electric cars. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
