Oracle aims to broaden SPARC's reach via cloud service


Oracle rolled out its SPARC S7 processor in servers, its engineered systems and as a cloud service. There are massive efficiencies, agility, and manageability benefits from virtualizing your data center and running it from software. SPARC is the RISC-based processor brought to Oracle in the purchase of Sun Microsystems. The processor has typically been used to run Unix workloads. Oracle offers SPARC in its servers and various engineered systems.

Nissan to move high-performance computing workloads to Oracle Cloud


Oracle on Tuesday announced that Nissan is migrating on-premise,high-performance computing (HPC) workloads to Oracle Cloud, in order to perform latency-sensitive engineering simulations. Back in 2018, Oracle introduced bare metal compute instances, powered by Intel Xeon processors, tailored for HPC workloads. The instances are part of Oracle's "Clustered Network" offering, which provides access to a low-latency, high-bandwidth remote direct memory access (RDMA) network. Nissan is one of the first automotive OEMs to leverage Oracle's bare-metal GPU-accelerated hardware for HPC workloads. Bing Xu, the GM of Nissan's Engineering Systems Department, said the company selected Oracle's cloud HPC offerings "to meet the challenges of increased simulation demand under constant cost savings pressure."

Oracle unveiled on Monday its initial autonomous database cloud that comes powered by Oracle Database 18c. It uses machine learning to enable automation that eliminates human labor, human error and manual tuning, to enable improved availability, high performance and security at a much lower cost. Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud is a next-generation cloud service built on the self-driving Oracle Autonomous Database technology using machine learning to deliver enhanced performance, reliability and ease of deployment for data warehouses. As an autonomous cloud service, it eliminates error-prone manual management tasks and frees up DBA resources, which can now be applied to implementing more strategic business projects. The Oracle Autonomous Database Cloud eliminates the human labor associated with tuning, patching, updating and maintaining the database and includes self-driving that provides continuous adaptive performance tuning based on machine learning.

Larry Ellison pitches Oracle's Gen 2 Cloud as purpose-built for enterprise


Oracle's cloud business is still a blip on the radar compared to the competition, but it's the only cloud provider offering security and automation features uniquely built for the enterprise, Oracle co-founder and CTO Larry Ellison argued Monday. "Other clouds have been around for a long time, they were not really designed for the enterprise," Ellison said in his keynote address at the OpenWorld conference in San Francisco. Oracle is now selling its Generation 2 Cloud, which is available in the public cloud and will be available next year with Cloud@Customer, one of Oracle's most popular products. The most important part of the Gen 2 Cloud, Ellison said, is the autonomous database. Taking aim at cloud giant Amazon Web Services, Ellison compared the autonomous database to the reported development of an AWS semi-autonomous database.
