New voices, at last


Science academies are well placed to help strengthen national systems of research and innovation, drawing upon the knowledge of experienced scientists across fields. But what about the voices of early-career scientists who are impassioned to bolster international, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational dialogue, with the goal of making decision-making evidence-based and inclusive? Since 2000, "young" science academies have emerged across the world. The United States has now joined this movement. In June, the U.S. National Academies launched "New Voices in Sciences, Engineering and Medicine," comprising 18 early- to midcareer scholars.

Head of American Arts Academy Stepping Down After 27 Years

Executive director Virginia Dajani is stepping down after 27 years, the academy told The Associated Press on Thursday. She will be succeeded by Cody Upton, currently the director of operations. During her time as executive director, Dajani presided over numerous capital projects and helped expand the academy's lucrative awards programs.

The Latest: TV Academy May Expel Harvey Weinstein

Weinstein has recently been accused of multiple acts of sexual harassment and assault spanning decades. He has been fired from The Weinstein Co., a TV and movie film production company he co-founded with his brother Bob. He already has been expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Producers Guild and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Judy Blume Among Authors Given Prizes by Arts Academy

Blume will receive a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which is also honoring Elizabeth Kolbert, Paul Beatty more than a dozen other writers. Blume is being given the E. B. White Award, a $10,000 for young people's literature, the academy told The Associated Press on Thursday, April 6, 2017.
