Chicago police say they made six arrests after responding to a call of a group of males shooting at people with paintball guns. The arrests were in the Tenth District, where seven paintball gun attacks from Thursday night to Friday night injured seven people. One of those injured was a man who lost an eye.
The Times Herald of Port Huron reports that police received complaints of paintballs being fired inside and outside of vehicles in the city about 55 miles (90 kilometers) northeast of Detroit. Paintball guns and marijuana were found in two vehicles stopped by police. One man was charged and four others ticketed this week in Detroit after paintballs were fired at an unmarked police car. Detroit Chief James Craig referred Friday to the running battle as "Paint Up, Guns Down." He said organizers pitched it as an alternative to gun and other violence.
Police have not said conclusively what sparked the trend. But in Atlanta, one of the cities where paintball fights were first reported, the calls began near the end of March -- around the same time that rapper 21 Savage began posting YouTube videos with the message "Guns Down, Paintballs Up," according to Sgt.
