IBM Watson and the future of Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Watson, a supercomputer by IBM, shot to fame in 2011 as the'brain' that beat two of the best contestants of Jeopardy! to win a million dollars. This system that combines artificial intelligence (AI) and sophisticated analytical software to answer questions was widely deployed in many industries. The supercomputer was developed in IBM's DeepQA project and was named after IBM's founder Thomas J. Watson. "You can be discouraged by failure, or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes, make all you can. Because, remember that's where you'll find success – on the far side of failure."

There's lots and lots of chat about AI (artificial intelligence) in banking using deep data analytics to augment our financial lifestyles. After all, Spielberg made a film about it way back in 2001. What's new is the developments in AI we're seeing from firms such as Google and IBM. IBM's Watson became famous for winning on Jeopardy! Watson (named after IBM's founder, Thomas J Watson) is a cognitive technology that processes information more like a human than a computer.

Deloitte disruption ahead IBM Watson

Disruption ahead: Deloitte's point of view on IBM Watson8 9. What makes Watson unique In technical terms, IBM Watson is an advanced open-domain question answering (QA) system with deep natural language processing (NLP) capabilities. At this point, the Watson Software as a Service (SaaS) platform is most effectively used to sift through massive amounts of text--documents, emails, social posts, and more--to answer questions in real time. Watson accepts questions posed by the user in natural language and provides the user with a response (or a set of responses) by generating and evaluating various hypotheses around different interpretations of the question and possible answers to it. Unlike keyword-based search engines, which simply retrieve relevant documents, Watson gleans context from the question to provide the user with precise and relevant answers, along with confidence ratings and supporting evidence. Its learning capabilities allow Watson to adapt and improve hypothesis generation and evaluation processes over time through interactions with users. Developers and other users can improve the accuracy of responses by "training" Watson. IBM is also continuing to expand Watson's capabilities to incorporate visualization, reasoning, ability to relate to users, and deeper exploration to gain a broader understanding of the information content. Watson recently launched a new platform service that has the ability to ingest and interpret still and video images, which is another significant type of unstructured data.

IBM Watson: Why is it such a big deal?

#artificialintelligence

In January this year, a Japanese insurance firm replaced 34 of its employees with an AI system based on IBM Watson. One of the reasons why IBM Watson is so important is because IBM has opened Watson up to businesses and developers. IBM opened up Watson application programming interfaces in 2015, allowing developers to use the cloud-based artificial intelligence system with their own programs. Cognitive intelligence, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality all present opportunities for businesses to serve their customers in new and exciting ways.
