The Boston Science Fiction Film Festival("Boston SciFi") is an 11-day cinematic event held at the historic Somerville Theatre from February 8th to the 18th. The 2019 edition marks our 44th anniversary as the longest running genre fest in America. The first nine days consist of a traditional film festival. Whether they be features, shorts, webisodes, workshops, parties or a new Hollywood film, BostonSciFi emphasizes emerging directors with distinct visions from around the globe. The Festival concludes with The Original Binge View, The Marathon (a.k.a., "The'Thon"), a 24-hour orgiastic motion picture endurance test.

Larry Bock dies at 56; biotech entrepreneur launched science festivals

Lawrence A. Bock, an Encinitas biotech entrepreneur who founded the San Diego Science Festival and used it as a model to create the USA Science and Engineering Festival, has died of pancreatic cancer. His death Wednesday was confirmed by USA Science and Engineering, the nation's largest science festival. This year, the event drew more than 350,000 people. In a statement, the festival's executive director, Marc Shulman, called Bock a "brilliant entrepreneur" and "passionate philanthropist." Bock was born Sept. 21, 1959, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

U of T researchers, entrepreneurs to showcase work at Elevate 2019 tech festival


Researchers and entrepreneurs from the University of Toronto are set to showcase their innovative work to a global audience during Elevate 2019, Canada's largest technology and innovation festival. The week-long event, which kicks off Friday, features hundreds of speakers and is expected to draw tens of thousands of attendees. U of T will play a central role thanks to its contributions to Toronto's thriving technology ecosystem and research that underpins key advances in fields like artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine. At this year's festival, U of T experts will be featured prominently at Elevate AI, a day-long program on Sept. 25 devoted to conversations around AI research, applications and commercialization held at the MaRS Discovery District. The scheduled speakers include Brendan Frey, the founder and CEO of Deep Genomics, which is using AI to build life-saving genetic therapies.

Canberra to toast the first Pint of Science festival at King O'Malley's


Professor Damith Herath will speak about artificial intelligence and robotics at King O'Malley's Pub on May 25 as part of Canberra's first Pint of Science series. Canberra will raise a glass to a fresh take on politics in the pub this week as the Pint of Science festival debuts in the capital. The national series, funded by the Australian Department of Industry, Innovation and Science and the ACT government, brings some of the most brilliant scientists into city pubs to discuss their latest research and field questions about their findings.
