Google creates AI that can make its own plans and envisage consequences of its actions

Google's artificial intelligence division is developing AI that can make its own plans. DeepMind says its "Imagination-Augmented Agents" can "imagine" the possible consequences of their actions, and interpret those simulations. They can then make the right decision for what it is they want to achieve. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Google's controversial DeepMind deal for 1.6 million NHS patients' data called legally 'inappropriate'

Google's artificial intelligence division received the medical records of 1.6 million people on an "inappropriate legal basis", according to a leaked letter from a top government adviser. DeepMind controversially struck up a data-sharing deal with the Royal Free Hospital Trust, for the creation of an app called Streams. In February last year, Google said Streams would help hospital staff monitor patients with kidney disease, but a document obtained by New Scientist caused further concern when it revealed that DeepMind was receiving historical medical data, records of the location and status of patients, and even details about visitors. Visteon's Silicon Valley Technical Center to Lead Development of Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Vehicles

"Most current advanced driver assistance systems based on radar and cameras are not capable of accurately detecting and classifying objects – such as cars, pedestrians or bicycles – at a level required for autonomous driving," said Sachin Lawande, president and CEO of Visteon, a leading global cockpit electronics supplier. "We need to achieve virtually 100 percent accuracy for autonomous driving, which will require innovative solutions based on deep machine learning technology. Our Silicon Valley team, with its focus on machine learning software development, will be a critical part of our autonomous driving technology initiative." Visteon's recently opened facility in the heart of Silicon Valley will house a team of engineers specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The center is located close to the West Coast offices of various automakers and tech companies, as well as Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley – two of the leading universities for artificial intelligence and deep learning in the U.S. In addition to leading Visteon's artificial intelligence efforts, the Silicon Valley office will play a key role in delivering control systems, localization and vision processing – interpreting live camera data and converting it to information required for autonomous driving.


Intel's new Silicon Valley Autonomous Driving Garage is primed for partnerships

Intel just launched a new Autonomous Driving Garage facility in San Jose, at a facility that used to house Altera, the company it acquired in 2015. The autonomous tech development facility is actually one of four garages Intel maintains globally, including one in Arizona, one in Portland and one in Berlin. The Silicon Valley location, however, makes sure its biggest partners in the emerging space are close at hand. The facility officially opened at a press event on Wednesday that included a ribbon cutting ceremony, talks by Intel subject matter experts on various aspects of its self-driving program and a number of demonstrations of different parts of its business, including a ride in partner Delphi's self-driving Audi SUV, a look at BMW's latest advanced autonomous capability testing vehicle (the first in the U.S. and among the first of the fleet of 40 it's committed to producing) and a look at the company's efforts to spearhead development of fast, secure wireless infrastructure. Intel's Garage includes a literal garage -- the spacious facility was large enough to house four vehicles with plenty of room left over for media, analysts and a strong cadre of Intel staff.

The Consumer Electronics Show, one of the world's tentpole technology shows, is a flashy vehicle for the engineering underneath. In the world of chipsets, the show was dominated by Nvidia, one of many companies seeking to power the artificial intelligence in next-generation cars and image processors. There were also plenty of opportunities for component manufacturers to find places in the flashy new cars and fleets that dominated some of the show floors. Chipmakers and sensor manufacturers are also keeping an eye on what customers want in the automotive space. Just seven states – Nevada, California, Florida, Michigan, Hawaii, Washington, and Tennessee -- and the District of Columbia have passed bills related to autonomous driving.
