A small number of U.S. troops were injured this week during a skirmish with Russian forces in northeastern Syria, American officials said on Wednesday, underscoring the risk of simmering tensions between the two rival powers in a hotly contested part of the country. Two U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational details, said the injuries were a result of a collision between Russian and American vehicles, and not any exchange of fire. The officials said four troops were showing mild concussion-like symptoms and were receiving medical attention at their base in Syria. Videos of the encounter that emerged on Twitter on Wednesday appeared to show Russian and Americans vehicles speeding in an open field, with a Russian vehicle ramming an American vehicle, and a Russian helicopter flying low over U.S. forces. The altercation, which happened on Tuesday, is the latest clash between Russian and American ground patrols in northeastern Syria after the United States withdrew from much of that area before a Turkish cross-border offensive last fall.

Cooperation among different vehicles is a promising concept for route planning of Mobility as a Service (MaaS). For instance, vehicle platooning on highways decreases fuel consumption because it reduces the air resistance and several trucks cooperate with each other when planning. Traditional platooning, however, cannot model cooperation among different types of vehicles because it assumes the homogeneity of vehicle types. We study a model that permits heterogeneous cooperation and discuss a route optimization problem under assumption that the heterogeneous cooperation benefits the objective function. We experimentally evaluate the formulation through using synthetic and real graphs based on a modern integer programming solver with various parameter settings, which are not tried in previous studies.

Despite promises of life-saving, climate-change fighting, and cost-efficient driving, the reality is that "the autonomous vehicle nirvana is 10 years out," said Michael Dunne, CEO of autotech consultancy ZoZoGo. "While it's not impossible to get there, even the most advanced technologies are not there yet and used mainly in confined areas where things are predictable.
