Asia Pacific youth expect Artificial Intelligence to have biggest impact on their future: Microsoft survey

SINGAPORE, 22 February 2017 -- In our increasingly digital world, new and emerging innovations are set to disrupt the way people live, work and play. According to youth across the Asia Pacific region, the most exciting technologies expected to have the largest impact on their future lives will be artificial intelligence (AI), virtual/mixed/augmented reality (VR/MR/AR), and Internet of Things (IoT), based on survey findings released today by Microsoft. In the Microsoft Asia Digital Future Survey, 1,400 youth were polled across 14 markets across the Asia Pacific region, comprising Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Artificial intelligence (AI) is ranked as the top technology that youth expect to have the biggest impact on their lives. In recent years, the confluence of power devices, cloud and data has enabled bold visions on how AI can be an integrated part of our digital future.

Google Annual Showcase: Virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and Android Pay

GOOGLE announced a draft of updates, changes, and new introductions to their latest products and innovations at their annual conference in California. The multinational tech giant focused on virtual reality and artificial intelligence during the showcase, and also announced a few new developments for their operating system, Android, which will affect its 1.4 billion users. Google's Android Pay – its rival being Apple Pay – just launched in the U.K. yesterday, having previously been an exclusive to the U.S. It also plans to expand Android Pay to Singapore and Australia this year, . Apple Pay on the other hand is already in China, Canada, Australia and Singapore, with Hong Kong and Spain in the works. The company will also be adding features to the Android operating system (O.S.) in a bid to outdo Apple's current O.S. Android users can expect better graphic and battery performances, and is also adopting a new security feature which allows users to encrypt specific files rather than the whole device.


Ancient burial site seen in VR

Archaeologists have recreated an ancient burial site in virtual reality, to help them study hard-to-access locations at the so-called Plain of Jars site in Laos and the millennia-old relics it contains. The researchers will also use virtual reality to study other archaeological sites at the Plain of Jars, many of them located where undetonated American bombs left over from the Vietnam War make it too dangerous to dig. The virtual-reality project combines aerial video captured by a drone with geophysical data and records of archaeological excavations at "Site 1" on the Plain of Jars, near the town of Phonsavan in central Laos. It aims to create a virtual record of the unique landscape and its hundreds of carved stone jars, some of which measure up to 11 feet tall and weigh many tons, say the researchers. The images and data have been integrated into a 3D video and data simulation at a room-sized, 360-degree virtual-reality facility at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.


Apple designs in-store augmented reality art sessions

Apple has designed a new augmented reality experience at Apple Stores around the globe. It's called [AR]T, and through it, participants will be able to experience AR pieces from contemporary artists in the store and out and about in select cities. People can also learn how to make their own AR experience at in-store classes. Some of the art can be experienced in an Apple Store via AR. The [AR]T Walk will consist of AR installations placed as visual layers atop San Francisco, New York, Hong Kong, London, Paris and Tokyo.
