Facebook Messenger Day: Another Snapchat clone that's already downloaded on your phone

The Independent - Tech

Facebook has started rolling out its latest Snapchat clone to users of its Messenger app. Messenger Day works in almost exactly the same manner as Snapchat, allowing users to post edited pictures and videos that disappear after 24 hours. It lives in the Messenger app, which features a new row of thumbnails positioned above your conversations, with each one previewing your friends' latest Messenger Day updates. You can skip through updates with taps, as you can on Snapchat, and also react to individual Day posts with private messages. Unusually, Facebook hasn't included a Like option.

Internet down: Many of the world's biggest websites stop working after Amazon Web Services cloud breaks

The Independent - Tech

Many of the world's biggest websites have stopped working because of a problem at Amazon. Amazon Web Services (AWS), the division of the retail giant that provides the infrastructure for much of the internet, appears to have broken. That means that all of the companies and websites that rely on its services – many of the world's biggest websites, like Imgur and Medium, as well as professional tools like SoundCloud and Trello – have stopped working at the same time. Amazon says that the S3 service hasn't broken but is just experiencing a higher "error rate" than usual. But the problems mean that the websites that rely on its services can't get online all the same.

Cybercriminals have started disguising ransomware as the official Pornhub app, according to new research from security firm ESET. Rather than providing access to the site's library of adult content, these programs proceed to lock unsuspecting users out of their handsets, demanding a payout of $100 for their release. Facebook scammers are copying users' names, profile pictures and statuses to steal their money

The Independent - Tech

Facebook scammers are making carbon copies of legitimate profiles in order to trick users into revealing financial and personal details, in a tactic known as'cloning'. By creating a new account using the exact same name, personal information and profile and cover photos included on your own profile – even going as far as copying your statuses – they can do a convincing job of imitating you online. The scheme allows them to confidently approach your friends and family members, who could unknowingly accept a friend request from the clone account and eventually share private information with it, depending on how convincing their messages appear.
