The interesting part of Wistron's confirmation is that it backs up previous reports pointing to wireless charging capabilities on the iPhone 8, which is expected to be released this fall. "We will have lenses for [a] 3-D sensing [module used in smartphone] ready to ship in the second half this year," CEO Adam Lin told a press conference. Last month, it was reported LG Innotek, a unit of LG group, would supply 3D facial recognition modules for Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone.
A Barclays analyst said in a research note the iPhone 8 will come with a faster USB-C connector, MacRumors reported. Analyst Blayne Curtis said the 10th anniversary iPhone will come with a 10W power adapter with USB-C connector and an integrated USB-C Power Delivery chip. Cypress Semiconductor will supply Apple with USB-C Power Delivery chips. The analyst suggested the chips in the upcoming iPhone will be the same one used in the recent 10.5-inch iPad Pro. The iPhone 8 would be able to charge quickly with a USB-C to Lightning Cable connected to the 10W power adapter or with the 29W USB-C power adapter that works for MacBooks.
Apple will likely reveal the iPhone 8 in less than a couple of weeks during the company's press event on September 12. The gathering was announced in media invites, according to Apple Insider. The event will take place at 10 a.m PST in the Steve Jobs Theater at the new Apple Park campus in Cupertino, Calif., a picture of the invite shows. Samsung is said to be the OLED display supplier for Apple. Apple reportedly agreed to a two-year deal worth $9 billion with Samsung for OLED panels.
With facts about Apple's much-anticipated iPhone 8 scarce, rumors abound prior to its expected fall release -- so many that it's hard to keep up. It seems like every day there is new information about the iPhone 8, and Apple has hinted it's not so happy about that. CEO Tim Cook recently blamed the "pause" in purchases of its current iPhone models on rumors about possible iPhone 8 features during his second-quarter 2017 earnings call this week. The upcoming iPhone 8, which could also be called the iPhone X, iPhone Pro or iPhone Edition, reportedly will come with an OLED edge-to-edge display.
Production for the iPhone 8's OLED screen is reportedly ramping up this month. Samsung, which is said to be the OLED display supplier for Apple, will operate seven OLED production lines at "full scale" this month for the 10th anniversary iPhone, according to ETNews (via Apple Insider). This appears to put some of the iPhone 8 release date delay rumors on hold. The iPhone 8, which is expected to be released this fall, is rumored to come with a bezel-less OLED screen. To meet Apple's demands, Samsung's production capacity for the screens spiked from 30,000 to 45,000 panels per month last year to 105,000 on Friday.
