Elon Musk's brain-implant lab, Neuralink, today released video appearing to show something the tech billionaire has been bragging about since 2019: a monkey playing a video game ... with its mind. In the video (and an accompanying one of the Neuralink signal readout, if you're into that), a rhesus macaque named Pager is shown playing simple games on a screen while sucking on a straw that's delivering a tasty banana smoothie as a reward. Pager, at first, uses a joystick to move a dot around a grid, placing it onto squares that light up one by one at random. In the next sequence, he's still using the joystick -- but as the gently British-accented narrator points out, the joystick apparatus is quite clearly unplugged. The implant, we're told, is transmitting data from the electrical signals his brain emits as he plays.
Elon Musk's secretive "brain-machine interface" startup, Neuralink, stepped out of the shadows on Tuesday evening, revealing its progress in creating a wireless implantable device that can – theoretically – read your mind. At an event at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, Musk touted the startup's achievements since he founded it in 2017 with the goal of staving off what he considers to be an "existential threat": artificial intelligence (AI) surpassing human intelligence. Two years later, Neuralink claims to have achieved major advances toward Musk's goal of having human and machine intelligence work in "symbiosis". Neurolink says it has designed very small "threads" – smaller than a human hair – that can be injected into the brain to detect the activity of neurons. It also says it has developed a robot to insert those threads in the brain, under the direction of a neurosurgeon.

Ex-staff members told STAT that the company is plagued by internal conflict and the slow pace of science could not keep up with Musk's demanding timelines. They claim scientists were given weeks to complete certain projects knowing the research needed weeks to perfect, creating a'pressure cooker' within the company. Neuralink was also found to test its surgical procedure on monkeys, even though the system posed a risk to the animals, a former employee told STAT.
US technology company Neuralink could create'novel exotic species' of dinosaurs in just 15 years, according to Max Hodak, one of its co-founders. Hodak is an American entrepreneur and technologist who co-founded the contentious neurotechnology firm with Elon Musk. The firm, known for putting a computer chip in the brain of a pig, could'probably build Jurassic Park' if it wanted to, Hodak said, in reference to the 1993 blockbuster film. Neuralink is currently working on technology that aims to allow people to hook their brains up to a computer and effectively become cyborgs.
