Dr. Eng Lim Goh on New Trends in Big Data and Deep Learning for Artificial Intelligence - insideBIGDATA

"Recently acquired by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, SGI is a trusted leader in technical computing with a focus on helping customers solve their most demanding business and technology challenges." Dr. Eng Lim Goh joined SGI in 1989, becoming a chief engineer in 1998 and then chief technology officer in 2000. He oversees technical computing programs with the goal to develop the next generation computer architecture for the new many-core era. His current research interest is in the progression from data intensive computing to analytics, machine learning, artificial specific to general intelligence and autonomous systems. Since joining SGI, he has continued his studies in human perception for user interfaces and virtual and augmented reality.

IBM Linux Servers Designed to Accelerate Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning and Advanced Analytics

IBM (NYSE: IBM) today revealed a series of new servers designed to help propel cognitive workloads and to drive greater data center efficiency. Featuring a new chip, the Linux-based lineup incorporates innovations from the OpenPOWER community that deliver higher levels of performance and greater computing efficiency than available on any x86-based server. Collaboratively developed with some of the world's leading technology companies, the new Power Systems are uniquely designed to propel artificial intelligence, deep learning, high performance data analytics and other compute-heavy workloads, which can help businesses and cloud service providers save money on data center costs. The three new systems are an expansion of IBM's Linux server portfolio comprised of IBM's specialized line of servers co-developed with fellow members of the OpenPOWER Foundation. The new servers join the Power Systems LC lineup that is designed to outperform x86-based servers on a variety of data-intensive workloads.

Computing was some pretty exciting stuff for those of us back in the 80s who still remember the first time we booted up our 386DX. While nobody could really say what the advantages of the "DX" were, better at math or something, we still ponied up the extra 200 USD to pick up that 386DX 16Mhz along with a Super VGA graphics card, then hooked that bad boy up to CompuServe via our lightning fast 14,400 baud U.S. Robotics "Sportster" modem. That was well before Al Gore created the Internet, and a lot has changed since then. So are we, so let's go through and define some of these terms and what they mean for investors. "The Cloud" – The idea here is that instead of purchasing applications then installing them onto a computer, you lease the applications on demand and access them over the internet.
