IITR establishes a Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

Each M.Tech program comprises a total of 67-72 credits, where 35-40 credits for coursework, a two-credit seminar, and a year-long dissertation of 30 credits Roorkee (The Hawk): Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has launched two new M. Tech programs under the recently established Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDS). Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) have the power to solve real-life problems and benefit humankind by harnessing valuable information from Big data. Academicians, professionals, policymakers, and business leaders are working towards creating a sustainable society with intelligent automation of complex real-life tasks powered by AI and DS. Such efforts provide better research opportunities and innovation leading to skill enhancement and empowerment of the Indian workforce. IIT Roorkee has set up a Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDS) with the above in mind.

IIT-Mandi claims to be first IIT to launch BTech in Data Science and Engineering

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi claims to become the first IIT to launch a full-fledged bachelor's programme in data science and engineering. The course will train students in computer science, applied statistics, applied mathematics and machine learning, fields that are required in the context of data science and its applications. The programme is being jointly offered by the School of Basic Sciences (SBS) and the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE) from the coming academic year 2019-2020. The course will be of four-years' duration. Speaking about the programme, Timothy A. Gonsalves, director, IIT Mandi, said, "All-pervasive sensors are collecting exponentially-increasing amounts of data about our machines, our structures, and ourselves. Our BTech in Data Science and Engineering will train students to collect, process and study these large data sets, discerning underlying patterns and deriving actionable insights. Graduates of this programme will have future-proof expertise that will enable them to thrive in the rapidly changing world of the next few decades."

Should Machine Learning Be A Separate Major Like Computer Science?

US universities, especially the big four (MIT, CMU, Stanford, University of California and Berkeley) are already ahead of the pack in machine learning research and artificial intelligence. Not just the US, Canadian universities, especially the University of Toronto and Montreal lead in the computational side of things. In India too, IIT Hyderabad's Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers an MTech in machine learning which prepares students for ML-oriented jobs as well as research areas. IIT-H's CSE department is active in research areas such as networking, distributed systems, algorithms, graph theory and also offers a three year research-oriented MTech programme which enables students to work on sponsored research projects along with the coursework. There is also a two year MTech course in Machine Learning and Computing offered by Mathematics department of Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST).

IIT Roorkee Launches MTech Programmes In Artificial Intelligence, Data Science

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has launched two new MTech programs – Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) under the recently established Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDS). Both the programmes will begin from the 2021-22 academic session, the institute said. As many as 23 faculty members from 15 different departments of the institute have joined the centre as joint faculty members. "These two MTech programs will train human resources with an in-depth knowledge of the tools and techniques necessary to translate data into actionable decisions," IIT Roorkee said. "AI and DS have opened new avenues for research across disciplines and specializations. The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science shall play an important role in shaping the AI and DS landscape of the country by promoting manpower development, research and innovation leading to opportunities for entrepreneurship," said Professor Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee.
