Boston Public Schools to start the year remotely

Boston Herald

Boston Public Schools students will begin the first week of the school year remotely, followed by a phased in hybrid model that begins with high-need children, according to a BPS announcement. The long-awaited decision came during a press conference with Mayor Martin Walsh, BPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius and Boston Health and Human Services Chief Marty Martinez. Students will learn remotely for the first week of school from Sept. 21 to Oct. 1, which is considered phase one, according to BPS. Starting Oct. 1, students with the highest needs will start in on a hybrid approach. Starting on Oct. 15 and 19, preschoolers and kindergartners will return to school in an alternating hybrid model followed by grades 1-3 on Oct. 22 and 26.

Toyota's global sales of hybrids top 10 million

The Japan Times

NAGOYA – Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday worldwide sales of its hybrid vehicles totaled 10,048,500 units as of the end of January, surpassing the 10-million-unit mark 20 years since the launch of its first such environmentally friendly vehicle. The Japanese automaker is aiming at achieving cumulative sales of 15 million gasoline-electric hybrids by 2020. Toyota launched its first hybrid model, the Coaster Hybrid EV microbus, in August 1997. In December of the same year it started selling the Prius, the world's first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. In 2000 it began global sales of the Prius.

Boston schools pitch hybrid 'hopscotch model' that would share classroom time

Boston Herald

A hybrid "hopscotch" plan is being considered by Boston school officials that could have the city's 50,000-plus students share classroom space on an alternating basis this fall, allowing kids to see a teacher at least twice a week. It's the first glimpse of a potential lesson plan that was unveiled Wednesday evening in a school committee Zoom session where officials said the draft idea both meets health guidelines and allows teachers to have face time with kids. "It's not really possible for us at the Boston Public Schools to have school reopen with all of our students in our school buildings on day one," said Tammy Pust, a senior BPS adviser who presented the hybrid model. "We can only put 50% of the number of students on our buses than we did in the past, which means we can't get our students to the school building in time to start on day one," Pust added. School is set to start in Boston Sept. 10.
