Binghamton University cancels classes after second student murder in 5 weeks

Binghamton University police released images of a suspect in the deadly stabbing of a 19-year-old student in a campus dorm room Sunday. A university in New York canceled classes Monday after the second murder of a student in five weeks. Binghamton University alerted students to the cancellation hours after first-year engineering student Joao Souza, 19, was stabbed to death on campus Sunday night. The university announced Monday evening that a suspect was in custody. Police said he was a student but did not give further details.

Binghamton University is adding a new graduate degree program, the Master of Science in Data Analytics (MSDA), which will begin in summer 2019. The cross-disciplinary program is the result of a partnership between three of Binghamton University's schools: Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, School of Management (SOM) and Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science. "We are seeing data increasingly shape the world around us, and it isn't exclusive to just one industry or sector of the economy. It's everywhere," says Manoj Agarwal, program director and professor of marketing in SOM. "With three schools behind the curriculum of the program, we believe a multidisciplinary approach will produce successful, multidisciplinary graduates who can face the unstructured data challenges of the future."

Toys for Tots Train Traveling From Binghamton to Albany

Officials with the Capital Region Toys for Tots say the toy-delivering train will leave Binghamton on Saturday and make several stops as it heads to Albany. The train will make stops Sunday between Albany and Rouses Point near the Canadian border.
