In the coming years, the automotive and industrial supplier, Schaeffler, wants to recruit up to 600 experts across the world to work on digital solutions for tomorrow s mobility. The planned new positions are part of a digitalization offensive the company started last year. A central pillar of the strategy is the development of intelligent products. On June 30, 2016, an auto-parts magnate received the kind of news anyone would dread: The Internal Revenue Service had determined he had engaged in abusive tax maneuvers. He stood accused of masking about $5 billion in income. The IRS wanted over $1.2 billion in back taxes and penalties. The magnate, Georg Schaeffler, was the billionaire scion of a family-owned German manufacturer and was quietly working as a corporate lawyer in Dallas. Schaeffler had extra reason to fear the IRS, it seemed. In 2009, the IRS had formed a crack team of specialists to unravel the tax dodges of the ultrawealthy. In an age of widening inequality, with a concentration of wealth not seen since the Gilded Age, the rich were evading taxes through ever more sophisticated maneuvers. The IRS commissioner aimed to stanch the country's losses with what he proclaimed would be "a game-changing strategy." In short order, Charles Rettig, then a high-powered tax lawyer and today President Donald Trump's IRS commissioner, warned that the squad was conducting "the audits from hell." If Trump were being audited, Rettig wrote during the presidential campaign, this is the elite team that would do it. The wealth team embarked on a contentious audit of Schaeffler in 2012, eventually determining that he owed about $1.2 billion in unpaid taxes and penalties.
The venerable 105-year-old IBM may be a global company, but while it has operated important labs and offices overseas, its business units have always been headquartered in the U.S. Until December of last year, that is, when it opened the new global headquarters for the IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT) unit in Munich, Germany. Now, faced with dramatically increasing global demand for Watson IoT solutions and services, Big Blue is doubling down on that investment. On Tuesday, IBM announced a 200 million investment in the Watson IoT headquarters, marking one of the company's largest investments in Europe in its history. The investment is part of the 3 billion IBM has earmarked to bring Watson cognitive computing to IoT. IBM says the move is a response to escalating demand from customers who are looking to transform their operations using a combination of IoT and artificial intelligence technologies.

IBM said it will invest 200 million in building out its Watson Internet of things headquarters in Munich as it adds collaboration centers with clients. Big Blue the 200 million is part of its overall 3 billion investment in IoT, but the move highlights a focus on Europe. Microsoft said earlier Monday that it will build an Azure center in France. According to IBM, the Munich investment is due to growing demand. IBM said it has 6,000 Watson IoT clients, up from 4,000 8 months ago.
