Los Angeles Times

The hype surrounding Lin-Manuel Miranda's off-Broadway musical was just reaching the Left Coast, but Raver-Lampman didn't know much. The production was adding two cast members to the ensemble for its Broadway debut in August, her agent told her. Would she like to audition? "I was like, 'Sure, I don't have a job,'" recalls Raver-Lampman, sitting in the plush cocktail lounge Dirty Water, on the ground floor of Twitter's San Francisco headquarters on Market Street. Hers is a story of happy accidents.

How to Think About Bots

#artificialintelligence

We live in a world of bots. Generally speaking, these sets of algorithms are responsible for so much on the backend of the Internet, from making Google searches possible to filling up your spam folder. But an emergent kind of bot, capable of interacting with humans and acting on their behalf, is playing a more active role in our everyday lives. Bots measure the technical health of the Internet, share information on natural disasters, predict disease outbreaks, fulfill our lunch requests, and send news articles to networks of people on platforms like Twitter and Slack. They may even write some of those articles.

Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus for Breaking News: Is There a Winner?

AAAI Conferences

Twitter is widely seen as being the go to place for breaking news.Recently however, competing Social Media have begun to carry news. Here we examine how Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter report on breaking news. We consider coverage (whether news events are reported) and latency (the time when they are reported). Using data drawn from three weeks in December 2013, we identify 29 major news events, ranging from celebrity deaths, plague outbreaks to sports events. We find that all media carry the same major events, but Twitter continues to be the preferred medium for breaking news, almost consistently leading Facebook or Google Plus. Facebook and Google Plus largely repost newswire stories and their main research value is that they conveniently package multitple sources of information together.
