After months of speculation and anticipation, the Cleveland Browns embarked on their long climb back to respectability Thursday night by selecting University of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Browns were followed by the New York Giants, who selected Penn State running back Saquon Barkley at No. 2 overall. The New York Jets picked USC quarterback Sam Darnold at No. 3. The Browns were scheduled to make the No. 4 pick, which they acquired from the Houston Texans during the 2017 draft in exchange for the pick the Texans used to draft Deshaun Watson. Mayfield is the first Heisman Trophy winner taken No. 1 overall in the following draft since Cam Newton went to Carolina in 2010.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield had a first half to remember in the game against the AFC South-leading Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon. Mayfield became the first Browns quarterback to throw four touchdowns in the first half of a game since Hall of Fame signal-caller Otto Graham did so back in 1951, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer noted. Mayfield completed 20 of 25 passes for 290 yards and four scores to lead the Browns to a 38-7 halftime lead. Mayfield, who completed passes to eight different receivers, tossed his fourth touchdown strike to Rashard Higgins with 5:46 to go in the second quarter. He also had a 75-yard touchdown pass to rookie wideout Donovan Peoples-Jones, and two other scores to wide receiver Jarvis Landry and offensive lineman Kendall Lamm.

As time expired just before the half, Mayfield launched the ball from about his own 40-yard line, and it went out of the back of the endzone where Ravens safety Chuck Clark tried to make a play on the football, but he collided with the goalpost. Pro Football Focus said that Mayfield's end of the half Hail Mary attempt was the longest NFL pass attempt it has ever charted.
