An student's idea for making a facial-recognition app for smartphones that can provide speedy access to the profiles of Olympic athletes who appear on TV has drawn interest from the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee, which hopes it can meet the changing needs of modern sports fans. The committee picked the idea proposed by Eisuke Sugitani, a 20-year-old junior at Doshisha University in Kyoto, as the best in a student idea contest for new media aimed at improving the public's experience with the quadrennial sporting event. If someone wants to know more about a particular athlete when watching the Olympics and Paralympics on TV, it will be difficult to find that person on the internet without first knowing the athlete's name. Sugitani came up with the idea for the app while thinking about how to familiarize Japanese television viewers with the thousands of foreign athletes who participate in the games. The problem must be the same for foreign fans watching Japanese athletes, he said.

Late last week, we reported about a 3D laser scanner that's predicted to be one of the standout features of the 10th anniversary iPhone. This week, there's now another reason to believe that the iPhone 8 could indeed come with the rumored 3D scanner. Just this past Sunday, The Times of Israel reported that a Tel Aviv, Israel-based cybertechnology startup was acquired by U.S. giant Apple Inc. The publication learned that the Israeli company, named RealFace, was established in 2014, and it is known for developing an advanced facial recognition software that provides a smart biometric login solution.

Dubai CCTV cameras to use AI, face recognition


Dubai: Thousands of CCTV cameras of various Dubai government agencies will now provide live feed to a central command centre, officials said. Under a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) network, security cameras across will relay live images of security breaches live to the central command centre, Dubai Police said. The cameras will monitor criminal behaviour in three sectors -- tourism, traffic and bricks and mortar facilities. The network, said the police, is being phased in via different stages to meet the Dubai 2021 Vision requirements of a smart city. Announcing the programme, Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said the new project called'Oyoon' (eyes) will tackle crimes in the city and help reduce traffic accident deaths and congestion.

This short paper is describing a demonstrator that is complementing the paper "Towards Cross-Media Feature Extraction" in these proceedings. The demo is exemplifying the use of textual resources, out of which semantic information can be extracted, for supporting the semantic annotation and indexing of associated video material in the soccer domain. Entities and events extracted from textual data are marked-up with semantic classes derived from an ontology modeling the soccer domain. We show further how extracted Audio-Video features by video analysis can be taken into account for additional annotation of specific soccer event types, and how those different types of annotation can be combined.
